Using photos on jovoto: On copyright and political correctness

We’ve said it many times before and still like to say it again: jovoto is about ideas, not final designs. But we all know how big of a difference an appealing presentation can make!
Not all of us are gifted with the talent to produce soulful scribbles which illustrate the essence of an idea, or have the technology, know-how and time at their hand to come up with professional visualizations. It makes it all the more attractive to search for suitable images on the web – after all, we’re surrounded by an unlimited amount of images, be it via google, flickr, or stock photo and illustration resources.
This is by no means forbidden and a legitimate practice. Be sure though to respect copyrights at any time. You should follow these guidelines when using images.
1. It is NOT legitimate to use copyrighted material and announce them as ‘draft’ versions. Copyright still applies!
2. Try using images that have been published under a Creative Commons License. Flickr for example hosts a whole section dedicated to images published under these licenses. There are a lot of great images here. Some require giving credit to the author only (by asking for permission, citing the name an/or linking), some include use in non-commercial contexts etc. The CC licenses differ in some details, but the essence of it is that these images are good to use in the jovoto draft environment. (Of course, not to be sold to the client as final product

3. Use free photo resources. Some platforms offer royalty free images, but these are not issued under the Creative Commons license. Please read the Terms of Use carefully before using these images in your desigsn.

4. Of course you’re free to use images you bought. Some platforms offer Royalty Free images that are downloadable for reasonable costs.

5. Use images sensibly and make sure they serve to illustrate your idea. (This is the part about political correctness). It’s obvious that you shouldn’t be ‘pimping’ up mediocre ideas with – let’s say – sparesley dressed beautiful men. Nor should you be using particularly violent, pornogrpaphic or otherwise questionable images.We’re not saying you should only produce perfectly PC ideas (No way!), but in cases where you think trouble may arise, please contact the jovoto staff prior to uploading and we’ll work it out together.

ich schreibs mal hier, obwohl es die diskussion bei happys einreichung betrifft und weiterfuehrt. vielleicht liest es ja jemand.
keiner hat happys qualitaet als designer oder seinen zu recht als sehr gut bewerteten entwurf, bemaengelt. grundsaetzlich finde ich es auch vollkommen ok, wenn jemand als skizze fremde illus benutzt. wenn man sie denn als skizze wiedererkennt und benennt. die selbstgemachten find ich natuerlich um klassen besser.
in den agenturen in denen ich gearbeitet habe, liebe donner, konnte man nebenbei keine fremden illus zu einem eigenen strausschen zusammenstellen, ohne dass die kollegen in beschaemendes gekicher ausgebrochen waeren.
in deinem fall, lieber happy, fand ich es nur etwas, nun nennen wir es mal, etwas sehr gelassen, auf das explizite lob der illus nicht mit dem hinweis einzugehen, dass diese nicht von dir sind. und die reaktion auf den hinweis von clari etwas derb und barsch.
ich bin persoenlich auch kein illustrator, wie jeder profi illustrator auf den ersten blick sehen wird, huestel, manchmal schaue ich mir illustrationsstile gerne ab. aber deswegen sind trotzdem meine eingereichten illus per hand geclickt, weil ich jovoto so verstehe, wie clari schon sagte, dass es hier doch um eigene ideen und eigene arbeiten geht. das muss gar nicht alles so perfekt ausgearbeitet sein.
nun habe ICH zumindest einen lerneffekt, bislang dachte ich, dass alle das so machen. lacht nur alle leis in eure faustchen. schoenen abend noch.

Hallo mgo, Ich weiss im Moment garnicht was du von mir willst, ich habe in meiner Idee alles dazu gesagt, also was soll das geheule hier, dein Gejammer hast du doch schon genug in meiner Idee getan, es hat bisher keinen interessiert bis auf Donner und Clari, meiner Idee hat es bisher auch nicht geschadet weil die Grafiken ein Puzzleteil eines ganzen Konzeptes sind. Ich habe doch meinen Fehler eingestanden, und aussergewöhnlich deutlich, wie bisher kein anderer, in meiner Beschreibung dies nachträglich formuliert. Mehr kann ich nicht tun. Es steht dir frei meine Idee deshalb schlecht zu benoten, ich kann damit leben aber ich muss mir von dir oder clari das nicht täglich vorheulen lassen, dazu bin ich einfach zu lange im Beruf. Dies war mein letzter Kommentar zu diesem Thema. So und nun kannst du dich auf die Suche nach weiteren Stockmaterial bei anderen Ideen machen und drauf rumreiten. Übrigens wird heutzutage in Agenturen Geld verdient und für einfache Entwürfe/Ideen wird gern mal auf Stockmaterial zurückgegriffen ohne das ein Illustrator stundenlang Geld verballert. Gruß Markus

, pass mal ein bisschen auf deinen Ton auf. Ich verstehe nicht warum du hier so wild um dich schlägst, trag doch lieber was konstruktives zur Diskussion bei. Letztendlich geht es nicht um dich und dein Preisgeld und auch nicht darum ob “stundenlang Geld verballert wird”. Wir sind hier in keiner Agentur und die Teilnahme sowie investierte Zeit auf jovoto bleibt jedem selbst überlassen.
Eigentlich geht es doch um den Umgang mit Stockillustrationen ohne Quellangaben in Contests wo eigentlich eigene Illustrationen bewertet werden, oder?
Ich würde mir wünschen, dass in Zukunft, (auch in laufenden Contests), Stockillustrationen mit Quellenangaben versehen werden. Auch ich bewerte Entwürfe mit homemade Illustrationen besser, ich gebe es zu
…steckt einfach mehr Arbeit drin.

@mgo danke für das beispielhafte übertragen der Diskussion in diesen thread. Ich glaube, das MIßverständnis hier liegt darin, dass happydesign hier als Einzelfall herausgestellt wird.
Die ‘korrekte’ Verwendung von Stock Illus/ Bildmaterial ist ein allgemeines Thema und wurde auch schon im Zusammenhang mit anderen Ideen/Autoren heiß diskutiert.
Klar, mgo und Clari haben absolut recht: Stockmaterial muss als solches gekennzeichnet werden. Es gibt hierfür im Ideenupload-Bereich ein gesondertes Feld!
Im Falle happydesign finde ich, dass er sich ausführlich dazu geäußert und sich um Richtigstellung bemüht hat.
