What’s in your name? What does this weird code stand for?

Many people have wondered about it but I kept it secret because the truth is quite silly. The origin of my handle goes back about 13 years ago when AOL like internet service got popular in South Korea. Every user received random name and mine was bcgg23232. I grew fond of it over the years and never made a new one.

You joined jovoto for the betacup. How did you find out about it and what’s your impression of this place?

I learned about jovoto through core77 during betacup contest. I really love the positive and encouraging community atmosphere of jovoto and appreciate what jovoto team member is doing for creative community around the world. I think there is so much potential in jovoto’s unique community and its voting system.

You now live in the US, but your’re originally from South Korea. Describe what’s special for you in both places, in terms of creativity and the opportunities for designers. Have you worked as a designer in both countries?

Having chance to experience two very distinctive culture allowed me to observe what people have in common despite their different background. Because user research is very important factor in object design, knowing how culture conditions people’s behavior and mindset helps me a lot. I started my design career in Chicago.

What was the most inspiring task you have worked on so far?

During my senior year in School of art institute of Chicago (SAIC), our class had an opportunity to work with American office furniture company Haworth to develop their office accessory collection. It was very inspiring task for me because our user research focused on subconscious human cognitive process and instinct. It was very different from traditional industrial design approach that focuses on visual aesthetic and problem solving. On top of it, my product was selected as a SAIC’s special promotional gift.

What’s your dream creative challenge, the one task you would absolutely love to work on?

My dream creative challenge is to develop an object such as hippo roller and the pot in pot that can influence people’s everyday life for the better.
