From London to Paris and Beyond: The Textile Orbit Design Journey
We know you’re curious to know what happens to your designs after they’re submitted in the Textile Orbit, so we’ve put together this five step journey explainer that will give you some valuable and exciting insight into how you’re helping to revolutionise the fashion industry.
As promised in our debriefings for the first two Textile Orbit projects, The Lacemaker and Work In Progress, we’re going to delve a little deeper into the journey your designs take and show you the process they undergo as well as a few teaser revelations about the client you’re working with.
Of course before the journey begins, the client spends time carefully considering all ideas and choosing the designs they think they will be able to sell, based on current trends and market.
Top Tip
Print ready designs are the one’s that get picked so remember to refresh your memory on the guide on “How to create a print ready design”.
The following five steps are what happens to your design once chosen, it’s a rigorous process that ensures only the highest quality designs make it through to the clients portfolio.
One
The client checks your design to see that it has proper pattern repeats, again there’s a lot of information for this in the “How to create a print ready design” guide we created.
Top Tip
The pattern drop you choose is important, designs are better when they use a half drop that is not as easily recognised as a repeat pattern.
Two
Edges (seams) are checked to see that your design can fit together precisely. With high end fashion everything needs to be perfect, so make sure your pattern isn’t coming loose at the seams.
Three
The RGB colour values will be transformed into LAB colour values. A Lab colour space is a colour-opponent process that includes all perceivable colours and is based on the LAB values that are explained in this video:
Four
The different layers in the design are then flattened to create just one layer for printing. This makes printing much faster and more efficient. Final print data can then be collected for the final stage.
Five
Your design is finally printed on fabric for the first time as a strike-off and, with the help of the print data, colours and quality are checked.
Raising Eyebrows
Excited about the high-quality, inspiring designs you’ve been submitting the client showed 10 of your ideas at the London Textile Fair, the biggest textile fair in London, which took place in July.
Based on the interest aroused by those designs the client presented further 30 design at Premiere Vision, a global event for fashion professionals, which is currently taking place in the fashion capital of the world, Paris.
Licensing
After a long journey and some exposure in the world of fashion, the client is ready to consider which designs will be licensed. So far 18 designs from the ‘Artificial Garden’ project were selected and will be announced and marked on the jovoto platform soon! As you can see from the overall process, it can take some time to get to the licensing stage, which then takes a bit more consideration on the part of the client.
The Textile Orbit is grabbing attention in London and Paris and we’re excited to see where your designs go next. Our client is excited about the quality and consistency of your designs so far and we hope this insight will inspire you to continue producing high quality work fit for the fashion industry.
