Betacup Contest started!

Dear jovotoans,

April has some big surprises up the sleeve for our platform. We’re hosting a new contest on jovoto, and it’s going to be huge!

We’re asking you to help reduce waste from coffee-to-go paper cups and come up with sustainable solutions!.

The idea was thought of and developed by the Betacup team. We had  reported about them a few months back, when they began campaigning avidly to establish more sustainable ways of drinking coffee.

Now, a sponsor willing to give the project a substantial push forward has entered the scene: Starbucks. The coffee giant likes the idea of the sustainable ‘beta’ cup and is open for experiments. The result is a cooperation between starbucks, betacup and jovoto: The Betacup Challenge.

This contest starts April 1st [edit: TODAY!!]- with a smashing $ 20 000 Overall Prize Money. $ 10 000 are awarded by the community to the community and another $ 10 000 by the jury/adisory board. Along with the betacup we’re introducing some important new features on jovoto.

1. The contest will be flanked by a professional jury.

Betacup as a project has had experienced advisors and supporters since its start. These are designers, entrepreneurs, social media- and advertising experts (such as Graham Hill of treehugger.com and Ryan Jacoby of IDEO) each with their unique view on ecology, technology and social action. This multidisciplinary troupe of nine extraordinarily smart and creative heads will make up the first professional jury board on a jovoto contest.

They will be viewing and commenting on your ideas – and you will have the chance to profit from their vast knowledge and specific professional opinion. The community winners are still determined by you, the community, but after the contest ends, the jury board will present you with THEIR top choice and award a special prize.

2. New Public Contest Mode

We’ve realized that, sometimes, it makes sense to have contests with a HUGE number of participants, as opposed to the select crowd on jovoto as a closed community. For the Betacup Prize, we want a lot of people to be able to participate. Technically, everyone that likes to drink coffee should be invited to join, because they too can have a most practicable solution to the paper cup problem.

For the Betacup Prize, we are therefore introducing the true Public Contest Mode. People will be able to register directly to join this contest, but they will be able to participate in Public Contests only. With this policy, we’re making the most of jovoto, and we’re sure this is going to be a real advantage. Large contests with hundreds of ideas, publicity, and visibility when it’s about spreading an idea and getting the word out about a certain issue, and small, private contests with experienced creatives when it’s about developing complex concepts and specialized designs.

We hope you enjoy these two major new features. We can tell you that we’re most exited about this step and are looking forward to the upcoming months! As always: feel free to comment and ask questions.

A really interesting highlight what comes there:
At the right time to integrate foci of the discussions into creative draughts: Subjects of the ecology and technology in product design.
I’m very interested in: subject Coffee – and in the subject Lastingness. Splendidly, I am glad about it!

Great that Starbucks is helping out! My thought was that there must be a stronger, more efficient paper shredder to shred discarded cups. Of course, that plasticizer must be eliminated in order to mulch the pure paper after.
