A journey into the past with Jim Philips
Skateboarding and surfing illustrations would have never been the same if Jim Philips hadn’t designed for the board-riding industry. I don’t know how many of you remember the screaming hand, the cellblocks or the wave hand, but I do remember them from my very first day I stood on a board.

Jim Philips was born in San Jose, Ca. in 1944 and he has spent most of his time living in Santa Cruz, Ca. After winning a surf car cartoon contest, his illustrations have been decorating, for over half a century, skateboard decks, surf logos, advertising campaigns, etc. From the mid seventies to the late eighties Jim was the art director for Santa Cruz Skateboards where he created hundreds of skateboard designs –like the Rob Roskopp or Natas Kaupas decks, t-shirts, and stickers with a record of over 8 million stickers sold within a 2 year period.

The first point to this post is to encourage the community users to participate in creative contests. The second point is to mention a jovoto user Endor, who submitted his idea “Soul Surfer” to the hydroponic contest and who’s style reminded me of Jim Phillips’s style -leading me into writing this blog post. As I said before, Jim Phillips got popular after winning a creative contest, which gave him the chance to show his talent to the world turning out to be what he was conceived to be. Maybe Endor will be the next Jim Phillips, or maybe it’s you, another creative, that thanks to a creative contest, has the chance to show the world what you are capable of, and maybe make a living out of what you really love -design!

Dude, you don’t know what this means to me! Seriously. I can’t find the words to thank you.. so it’s just: thank you!

I’ll just ask for another t-shirt design

I don’t want to be inpolite, but i think that it’s a bit early for that Jim Phillips article. You are comparing Jim’s artworks and Endors shirt(which is great), during a running contest and make “advert” for Endor. Would you have done that article after the contest and I’m pretty sure that Endor is going to win, it wouldn’t be a problem, I mean it’s just not fair for all the other community members. Thanks

@ Elron: I guess this blog post could be misunderstood in the way you state, and I apologize to you for this misunderstanding because it’s absolutely not the point of it.
The point is to encourage you guys to do great work. jovoto’s aim is to to support you guys out there, back you up and challenge you with the best contests. When we see good stuff we appreciate it and we mention it, putting some spice to the whole process. Just like when any jovoto team member loves an idea, it doesn’t count in the overall rating, but you know that we appreciate it! That should encourage you guys as well.
By the way, this is your community, not ours. So sharpen your pencils and deliver better work than Endor’s! You can do it! And in the end, it will be up to you, the community, to decide which are the best ideas, not up to us.
Elron
Well, that was not my aim, sorry for misunderstanding
I get your point and red your article again and must say it’s very encouraging, honestly. I’m happy to be here and being a part of the comm.
