Interesting idea - could you include some elements of gaming into it? Badges, etc (like foursquare)? It probably won't be widely adopted, but for a certain segment of the population, it would encourage reuse and could be interesting. Would this be different for returning disposable cups vs. bringing your own reusable cup?

Yes, you can include whatever you want on it. Even an iPhone/Facebook/whatever app to track your points.
You could earn points every time you bring your own reusable cup.

I read this too quickly the first time.

love the idea of turning the cup into a status symbol.

+ any specific thoughts on how to associate the cubs with value? seems like typing into reward card system is key.

+ the badge idea is also interesting, but so are discounts, so worth thinking through what some of the rewards might be.

Hi Shaun, sorry for the delay, traveling around the country, forgot about the contest...

I think that it's a matter of using an online reward system. I.E. Wouldn't that be interesting if, every time you enter at Starbucks, your cell would pop-up your points on screen via SMA/iPhone-Android app? . It depends on profiling and acceptance, plus some privacy issues that must be resolved, though...

Discounts can be associated with badges, and vice-versa. Best of all, you could use your "mileage" for gifts...

I like this. I think making it into a game could be really powerful, at least with one large cross section of Starbucks demographics. Couple issues that I can see would be first, that it's limited to just Starbucks. Would be nice if this could work cross-coffeeshop style somehow. Second, it's unclear to me what's happening to the cup. Are you bringing them in for Starbucks to then recycle? Or are you using the same cup over and over?

I think this has a lot of legs!

      Sorry for the delay.
I tought about transforming the cups into bricks for construction, as an example (#4614).
So people wouldn 't have to have frills about using the same cup over and over...

The "game" approach is similar to the entry just prior to yours whcih suggested collecting a series of cups for a freebie. #4611. But I think you are the first to suggest and ego/status angle and for that I say smart. Returning cups is an important step if a good recycle system is in place.

I like the idea of stored value here. What's the simplest, easiest way to make this happen?

I like the thought of connecting the cup with value, but using different cups with different numbers on them might be difficult for the barista to handle, don´t you think?
