The cup is formed by conical rings with threading on the top. After extending the rings you securily lock them in place by a quarterturn to form a rigid cup.
The bag is placed inside the extended cup and ensures a watertight vessel for the coffee. The silicone lid snaps on the top and holds the liner in place.
Because the thin liner is the only part that will be disposed of after use, this solution dramatically reduces the eco footprint vs the current solution.
Materials
- The collapsible cup is made from recycled plastic.
- The liner is made from Mater-Bi polymer that degrades after disposal.
- The lid is made from food-grade silicone rubber and can be reused after washing.

yes I have seen that, but it doesnt address a couple of critical issues:
- make sure the cup is leakproof
- structural integrity of cup
- need to clean the cup
I hope to address those :) and have some other ideas coming as well
shaunabe:
The cleaning I hope to address to have a total removable liner so both the cup and lid will not come in contact with coffee. This way there is no cleaning involved, which in my opinion is a big deterrent for a lot of people to use a travelmug or such.
The leaking will be prevented with the liner as well. Because the cup will contain a hot liquid it will have more strict requirements than current beer cup solutions/camping solutions that are on the market I think.

Yes , I have thought of that. Each ring have a thread at the top on the outside that interlocks with a thread on the inside at the bottom of the ring above it. By giving the cup a quarterturn after you've extended the cup you securely lock it in place and it can't collapse.
Need to spend some more time on this one and see if there is a way to use a removable liner that prevents the lid from getting in touch with coffee too.
Any ideas? Am thinking of garbage bins, baby bottles that have liners other?
Thanks again for commenting!

- A snap on cap that can be used as a cover for when the cup is in use and as a lid to keep the cup collapsed while transporting.
- Rubber bottom on the cup for grip.
- Optimized the sidewall so it's more of a continuous form vs. stepped.

I feel like a solution such as chef'n measurement cups ( http://www.amazon.com/Chefn-SleekStor-Collapsible-Measuring-Cherry/dp/B000RN71XY/ref=pd_sim_k_2) are not sturdy enough to safely carry a hot liquid.
I feel this is the simplest and most cost effective way to create a collapsable cup with a liner. I do feel like a biodegredable liner is the best way to go as a lot op people are reluctant to carry a dirty cup with them and clean it and will stop using it in the loing run.
My thoughts are that by having a disposable biodegredable liner people will actually keep using it.
ps cuptokeep is a nice full silicone solution, but hasnt addressed any possible rigidity issues yet.

I'm just wondering whether a hybrid between your idea and a folding silicone mug might be possible?
So you would have a hard outer shell as with this design, but inside, there would be a folding silicone liner similar to the chef 'n measurement cup you mentioned above, or the Sea to Summit X mug. It would be attached to the bottom of the cup, and would extend automatically.
Because the silicone doesn't need to carry its own weight, it could be thinner. The hassle to the shop of dealing with liners would be lessened, and it would be environmentally better.
I'm not a designer, but if you think this design may be possible, then do feel free to submit it as an alternative idea.
In terms of the problem to do with washing it, I think for some people, this would be OK if they could put the mug in the dishwasher. The main thing would be that it would have to seal so tightly so that coffee dregs didn't come out of it.
Kind regards,
David
