Well conceived. Programs that emphasize participation through freebies and protocol make concerned customers feel better about their actions and can become trendy. Some form of this program could achieve the desired objective - reduce waste.

When the revoltuion comes, coffee drinkers will stop, sit, rest, drink their coffee for 15 mintues, recharge their batteries and then move on to the next pressing moment of the day. the new culture will be SLOW, take 15 minutes out of your day to be present with your coffee mug, soothing music and comfy chair. The tables will have screens in them so the drinker can catch up with some news (no emails; just news). The walls will also have these screens. 15 minutes is all it takes. (well maybe 20 if its a grande).

I like your idea of rewarding the customer who stays and "punish" those who use paper cups. But what about those who have no other choice, but take their coffee with them? You can´t punish them for their full timetable and you can´t dictate them how to plan their time either...

Incentives and alignment are a key part. I couldn't agree more that offering a drink-in version of a cup will immediately solve part of the issue. That said, can you provide some thinking around the incentives and rewards? Without them, this is a type of approach, but not quite a specific solution. Great line of thinking though. Very professional and relevant for the issue.

I've just come back from my first trip to New York - what a city! BUT I was shocked to find that one Starbucks I went into had no ceramic mugs. The barista looked at me as though I was crazy (probably the accent) and didn't have time to engage in a conversation.

The ideas presented here are the seed for further brainstorming, discussion and eventually policy changes. I could dictate the how and the specifics but would that get buy in from those who will be implementing the change? I'm more than happy to facilitate these sessions and move you all towards a Slow and Rewarding culture

I love it! I don't think Starbucks should necessarily give away to-go cups, but charging $.50 or so would be good. I like the incentives to drink at the shop. Good point about the stirrers - metal spoons would be so much nicer!
