Many U.S. airports have a book trade system where you can basically rent books during your flight or trips. These Buy It, Read It, Return It shops are known as The Paradies Shops http://www.theparadiesshops.com/ and I am in no way affiliated with them but my idea is similar.
Since most people don't think to bring empty re-usable mugs with them through airport security, airport terminal coffee shops could provide a "green" mug rental service. Upon return of your coffee mug to a designated coffee shop at your final destination you could be rewarded with airline miles or "java points". Use your mug within the airport terminal and on the plane. This would reduce my average round-trip coffee cup use from 5 disposable cups to 2 trade mugs. The carbon footprint from washing re-usable mugs is minimal compared to the waste created by disposable coffee cups and paper collars that don't get recycled.
Starbucks could theme their "rental" mugs, and that would create a subtle advertising campaign. These mugs may or may not be available for general purchase. Trading "rental" mugs with customers when purchasing a re-fill would allow Starbucks to keep mugs given to customers certifiably clean to satisfy industry standards and avoid liability for customers wishing to repeatedly drink out of their own dirty mugs.
An airport setting creates maximum exposure with not having to create new stores or locations or invent a special biodegradable cup. Installation of a large capacity dishwasher may be necessary as well as a display area for mugs. Acquired miles could be tallied on receipts and via a coupon code, redeemed online for your selected airline.
Acquired miles could be used towards offsetting your carbon footprint not just free flights. I just recieved notice that I had miles that were expiring and was asked if I would like to purchase magazines with them. A better option would be to ask if I wanted to plant trees, buy a carbon share, or maybe get a coffee gift card.

I've got a rewards concept in my own submitted idea too.
Perhaps your idea could benefit from a wider transport rewards scheme so that it isn't just usable by flyers: Bus/train/ferry/tram tickets are usable by much more of the population and encourage people to use daily transport that is more enviro-friendly than planes,cars and cabs.
