I like the attitude of this idea. I think its one big drawback is that if Starbucks stops using reusable cups, they will undoubtedly lose customers to the coffee shop down the street that still has paper cups, and consequently lose money. If you could come up with a financial model in which they could make up their losses in tumbler sales (perhaps they could start selling more inexpensive tumblers so the people caught off guard by the change can adjust more easily) the idea might seem more feasible.

I like this idea a lot! It make the most sense to me.
But, as msiboni already so truly stated, if just ONE coffee shop stops the to sell coffee to go, others takeover.
It has to be a win-win situation. People right now feel they HAVE to be on the go… there needs to be a re-education – towards the ZEN way ("if you are in a hurry go slowly!")

How about a simple discount for the "sit down" coffee, say 10%? People bringing their own travel mug (or buy one at Starbucks) get the regular price. And for the first couple of years there will be an extra charge on "to-go" coffee in a paper cup.

And at the beginning, Starbucks could have specials: "Sit down" time, when coffee is served for free or half price etc.

There are many possibilities. But Starbucks is the right coffee shop to start something like this!

In an ideal world, this is a great solution. The important thing to remember, though, is that these companies are looking to reduce their environmental impact while retaining their customer base (if not increasing it). Depriving their customers of options would probably have the opposite effect.

Your later comments address the issue of to-go options, and I think you're heading in the right direction. Providing more options and encouraging consumers to choose those that are more eco-friendly is a better approach. Strategies to reinforce an eco-positive crowd mentality could help the "drink-in" concept grow.

thank you. And finally enjoy a moment versus standards, speed and boredom. A different cup from different cafes, bistrot or restaurant with all the diversity, their surprises, with above all a real excellent coffee. indeed just to reabilitate a pleasurable moment. Bravo!

Ich bin auch deiner Meinung, aber leider ist das keine Lösung für die Mitnahmemöglichkeit des Kaffees

This is a great idea. Getting people to change they way they drink their coffee may take some time....but I'm sure it will catch on. Good luck!
