    Qvistar,

If we go back to the very basics, people consume liquids on the go, requiring some means of transporting those liquids. While I didn't say as much, this idea could be expanded into the realm of water--where aluminum bottles can be scanned for refill at local establishments with bottled water, eliminating the plastic disposable bottle completely. Think a large Evian tank that portions out servings--at a fraction of the cost a litter bottle of Evian would cost. And by rewarding usage through consumer compensation, companies that chose not to participate suffer the loss of advertising and sales.

Great thinking! It really reminds me of a keynote I saw a couple of weeks ago. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xetj0GuLlmk

@sweetmelissa9978 - Agreed, there are some similarities between our two ideas. I would suggest the unique strength here is in the incentive to carry the canister, rather than just a points card. I think linking the immediate and long-term incentive to the reusable canister itself generates the desired action (and subsequent habit).

Slightly changing the words of Jerry Seinfield, "You know how to buy a reusable coffee cup. But you don't know how to reuse the reusable coffee mug" (oh, love the Jerry!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7uvttu8ct0

    @Javnboxtel - thanks. I'll look into that when I get a moment.

@bunterberg - upgrade? Maybe not. Then again, maybe an upgraded mug would be worth staying in touch with.

    I like the systemic approach.

-Is Go Green! Beans an existing product? I was a little confused.

-For the Wii Fit tie-in, how is the product the customer ordered communicated?

-You cite advertising (encouraging users to take a specific action to earn more points) as the driver to get companies involved. How will they communicate these opportunities to the customer? Is it through the Go Green! Beans front-end?

-Is the anti-microbal non-submersion lid an existing product, or will that have to be invented?

-Do I always get something free when I scan at the Bluetooth point? Is it a lottery?

-Are you proposing a consortium between coffee vendors to enable adoption?

-I don't understand the penalties for multiple cups. It adds an air of negativity (lose this and you'll be punished), and I think it will hurt adoption. A carrot is much better than a stick in this case, I do like the increasing rewards for continuing to use the same cup.

    Thanks. My responses:

The "Go Green! Beans" is not an existing product, but would be the database interface that hosts information on users, and can be linked / is accessible to Social networks via currently available app sharing technology.

The Wii can already communicate with online communities for shared games, or point-comparison analysis. Just as the "Go Green! Beans" site would house information on the user (and his canister), so the Wii Green! would be granted access to the site and visually represent the environmental savings. Actually, Wii Green could be much broader--linking points accounts that show purchases of various products from Home Depot, Office Depot, BP, etc (either pulling electronically through Credit Card records or through points accounts) and rating the purchase of products based on their environmental impact.

Companies will initially communicate money-saving incentives to users when the cup is purchased, again through the Go Green! Beans site (especially as these are linked to Social network feeds), and possibly through email or SMS. However, the innovation of the cup as a vehicle for triggering savings (instantaneous and on-going) at local ports. An advertising campaign to this end would increase awareness across varied formats.

The antimicrobial lid incorporates a variety of existing technologies into a completely new product and design.

As for scanning the lid--you always get something. Whether that something is the same thing as what someone else gets can be something established by algorithm by vendors, increasing in value based on the regularity of customer loyalty.

While a consortium would absolutely make the most sense, the adaptation of the product by two main companies would set the standard for efficiency, increased customer loyalty, and environmental care--such that, yes, like the standard USB charger now available, a consortium to universally save money on wasted paper/plastic products would come about.

The penalty is to encourage care, retention, and perpetual use of the same reusable canister--not simply the recurring repurchase of numerous canisters. If a user desires to have a third or fourth cup, he'll simply have to connect it to a different account. Of course, this would also affect his current scoring and what tier he is in for points award. If the "penalty" of more than two cups is a barrier to entry--then having a time limit, like a year, or two years per canister would also be effective (though, granted, to a lesser degree).

PS. "www.gogreenbeans.com" is a redirect site for a company that doesn't have anything to do with coffee. The phrase Go Green! Beans (or any variety) is not registered as a trademark and is available.

Very nice. I like the emphasis on rewarding the consumer rather than a retaliatory process that watches for "bad" behavior. I can't wait to see the lid! :)
