First i want to say you i'm so sorry for my poor english but i try to be better in the futur
The concept Earthmakecup is a global concept for significantly reducing the environmental impact of Starbucks coffee shop.
To do so, several points should be set up and working so that the entire system is more respectful of the environment.
1 point: a reflection on the cup itself
2nd point: a reflection on the collection system
3rd point: a reflection on the waste generated
4th point: a reflection on the consumer involvement
5th point: a reflection on the economic impact for Starbucks
1. the cup:
Currently, the cup is plastified cardboard with a plastic cap.
It is provided free by Starbucks to the customers that generates high costs of manufacturing, transportation and storage for the company, and has a strong ecological impact on the earth (20 000 000 trees per year).
The concept here is to change the materials and method of manufacture of cups.
To do this, here is the example I decided to address:
A plastic cup with a cap that doubles as a grip in cardboard (one piece)
The cup is easily recyclable plastic and cardboard cover as well (I will detail later how).
2. Collection:
The goal here is to collect the cups and caps in their Starbucks to encourage consumers to have his recycle approach.
Other elements will enable them to push this eco-gesture.
3. waste:
Currently, the cup and cap are thrown away without hope of recycling.
The goal here is to collect and sort a maximum of waste.
To do this, I decided to incorporate, in the coffee shop, a dedicated space for recycling who contain two particular containers:
- A container for caps and coffee grounds used to make granules compressed which feed a pellet boiler that can produce heat for the building, electricity and hot water reducing considerably the resources required to operate a Starbucks.
- A container for collecting the plastic cups that will allow Starbucks to negotiate with the resale price of their waste disposal facilities (waste disposal facilities sell them to the plastics industry to produce new objects).
4. involvement:
To involve the consumer in this process, several elements will be implemented:
The first, already mentioned above, would be to incorporate an area of waste collection in the coffee shop. But this collection space has another goal: now, when you drop an old plastic cup into the container provided for that purpose, you get back a cup-disc.
What is a cup-disc? well here comes a 3rd element of involvement: You will make yourself your own cup and more easily understand the impact you can have on the planet because:
you made this waste!
A last point to support this approach: the price. Indeed, if you have provided your cup when ordering your coffee, you get a discount of 10ct compared to normal price of coffee (cup included).
It also allows starbuck reduce the volume of its cup storage, manufacture and transport
but also save trees.
5. economic impact:
For Starbucks, several advantages:
- Reduction of manufacturing costs
- Reduction of freight costs
- Reduced storage costs
- Reduction of overall energy
- Better brand image in terms of ecology
All off this for a reasonable investment on long-term.
Earthmakecup concept in 10 steps:
1 / I decide to go for coffee at Starbucks
2 / I put my cup in the old container
3 / I get my cup-disc
4 / I build my own cup with my cup-disc
5 / I order my coffee
6 / I give my cup freshly formed
7 / I am served
8 / 10ct I pay less for my eco-gesture
9 / I go and drink my coffee
10 / I keep my cup in his bag for my next coffee break
If the consumer decides not to join this process, having used such as PET plastic for the manufacture of the cup and the simple cardboard cap, it will put them in the trash without being too polluting the current cups.
Indeed, PET and cardboard are recycled very well today.
Soon, I will introduce:
- A new cup and cap
- A space to include recycling in the coffee shop
- A machine where you drop your cup used to be your cup-disc
- A cup disc
- A machine to form your own mug
- A bag to carry your cup before and after use
- The principle of making coffee granules and the associated boiler that will enable Starbuks to have a more positive ecological balance
