I’m thinking about a travel mug rental system. Here is how it will operate. Each person who comes into Starbucks enrolls in the Starbucks Eco Program. They get a swipe card that contains their name, account information, and statistics like how many trees they have saved or how many cups they prevented from going to landfill. Customers can also sign up online and get a card mailed to their address. When that person buys a coffee, it is served in a reusable cup (travel mug) that has an RFID tag which is then linked to the customer’s account. The customer only pays for the coffee, but a $10 deposit is charged to their account (this is the cost of the reusable cup). That customer then goes about their day and drinks their coffee.
Out and about the city, there will be automated stations that will collect these cups. If a person finishes their coffee while walking around, they can swipe their card at one of these stations, deposit their cup and obtain a $10 credit to their account. An LCD screen can display their account balance, outstanding cups, how many trees they have saved etc. To prevent collecting stations from overflowing, each Starbucks will be responsible for collecting cups from their designated cup collecting stations on a routine basis .
If a person brings their reusable cup back to a Starbucks, they follow the same procedure by swiping their card and obtaining a credit to their account for the cost of the cup. Each cup has a 7 day sign out period. If after the 7 days the cup has still not been returned, an email, or text message can be sent to warn the customer that they have now purchased the cup. To reverse the charges, that person simply needs to return the cup to any Starbucks or to one of the Cup Collecting stations throughout the city.
The cups are cleaned and sanitized by Starbucks and ready for use by the next customer who orders a coffee. These rental programs have been in use for quite some time and have proven to be very effective at reducing waste.
I’m additionally thinking about adding some type of rewards program. I mean, we are saving the planet so we should get some type of reward for it.
Some people may be worried about sanitation. I need to think about some way of reassuring people that the cups are clean and safe to drink from.
Comments welcome, I will be posting visuals very shortly, but just wanted to get my idea out here first. Cheers :)

Something similar was pitched here for the collection points - have a look http://www.jovoto.com/contests/drink-sustainably/ideas/4668.
@adidame, partnering with Redbox is also a great idea.
