People LOVE to gamble. Just look at the stock market, lotteries, and casinos. Greed and fear drive the stock market. Want for more (greed) and fear of losing what you already have are the two big emotions involved there. I wonder if fear could play a motivating role? Just a weird thought.

If recycling does get big, we would need machines to handle to materials so this is good thinking.

Very nice idea. You've really got a feel for the types of strategies that would be effective in motivating an otherwise non-ecofriendly consumer to recycle.

Hi there, like the idea in a recycling point of view, though it does not solve the issue that you still have to produce paper cups in the same amount as today (jovoto states: 58 billions a year in north america) and the issue with coffee shops having disposable paper cups also lies in that you have to produce 58 billions of these cups every year, not just handling the waste after use.

But like the idea as a way to make people want to recycle, and your idea could easily be applied on other products ie bottles and cans as well, good work!

How could a system like this stimulate a secondary market of collection? In dense urban environments (especially those with deposits on glass/cans), there are many individuals collecting discarded materials. This could help with that.

I have reviewed & voted for you idea. Our retries are a step forward towards a greener planet with less waste. Please have a look at my idea and I greatly appreciate your opinion http://www.jovoto.com/contests/drink-sustainably/ideas/5237

You can return all the cups in the world, but I still don't believe they are recyclable. Unless there is a new kind of cup, this simply uses a lot of money to put the problem in the hands of somebody else. Without information on the type of cup, arguably a lot more money and resources and energy could go into the whole process of manufacturing/shipping/recycling/downcycling etc.
Also, we all love a game of chance, but if you can't play when you bring your own cup, what's the incentive to do that?

@rjacoby - exactly! that's why i believe the deposit idea is so strong. the issue then comes up with what the material will be used and how it will work as an entire system. you can bet if there's monetary value associated with returning something, someone WILL return it.

not in necessarily in favour of self promotion in other people's comment streams, but for the sake of argument, i've been trying to capture that idea here: http://www.jovoto.com/contests/drink-sustainably/ideas/5212

Thanks all. And because a number of you mentioned the idea of reusables vs recyclables: I completely agree that it is better to reuse than recycle. Could this system I propose also support re-use? I suppose it could if the customer that brings in their own mug gets a small token or code printed on their receipt that also allows them entry for a random reward.

Great idea and really concise explanations.

I guess you could easily have a few versions of the machines to account for the different coffee cup sizes.

Just trying to think of the typical customer who uses a disposable instead of a mug or thermus. Basically it relies on that customer to remember to bring back the empty cup )or dispose of it in a way that would enable someone else to take it back- like a kid or homeless person). Your prize incentive would need to be good enough for them to bother to do that.

If you can create an incentive good enough to make that customer bother to bring the cup back, then it wouldn't be such a big leap to try to get that customer to re-use a cup would it?

Good luck! I've given you a good vote!

I really like the concept of encouraging people to recycle the cup. Even if the material in the current cups is not easily recyclable, this type of idea is a must once better materials are used. I submitted my idea with the same concept ( http://www.jovoto.com/contests/drink-sustainably/ideas/5258 ). Do you think the cost of your recycle stations and the need to power them would be a deterrent to adopting them large scale?
