The objective here is to make the public aware of the paper cup waste problem by encouraging them to change their habits in support of a powerful cause.
If we were able to get several corporations to participate in an ad campaign to donate one cent for each of the 58 billion paper cups we threw away last year, we would have generated 580 million dollars in revenue that could have gone toward a good cause -- like cancer treatment or research.
The reason the to-go cup is often discarded is because it represents too little value in the mind of the consumer. This concept is designed to increase the value of the cup without using deposit incentives. Instead, this method uses a social incentive.
To get people to alter their behavior on a large scale, they need a good reason to change, and this is the idea behind the "cups-for-cancer" approach. The idea focuses on changing behavior rather than changing the cup itself.
This campaign would involve both personal and corporate contributions. People participate by bringing in their old cups and the corporations help by matching funds raised according to the number of returned cups.
Donating a percentage of profits toward helping to fight childhood cancer , breast cancer, or any disease for that matter, could help to motivate a massive change in behavior.
Starbucks could lead the way by soliciting matching funds from other corporations for each cup returned to one of their designated recycling centers.
The campaign would be a great way to introduce the issue of paper cup pollution and at the same time get people working together for a good cause. This approach works to help solve two problems with one campaign.

Thanks for your comments and support. I was trying to think of ways to motivate people to change those deeply ingrained habits.

Thanks for the review. Somewhere up the comments list is the suggestion to display the number of cups returned for recycling on a digital display at the participating stores. Sort of like the national debt counter we've all seen. This would help to keep the patrons motivated as they could see the numbers climbing steadily.
