This idea is designed to augment and operate in conjunction with "My Starbucks Rewards Reuse."
Herein is proposed an idea for a Social Community similar to Foursquare - Yet "Container Reuse" in contrast to "Check-in" is the driver. This idea seeks to leverage Starbucks' Cloud Network. Therefore (as envisioned) it would have look, feel and functionality very similar to mystarbucksidea.com. As provided "Reuse Stars" earned via "My Starbucks Rewards Reuse" would be used as currency of sorts to purchase "Rights-to-Rein" over a given Starbucks location.
How it Works
All participating Starbucks store locations would be "Open for Rights-to-Rein" for a given period each month (e.g. 24 hours). When Starbucks locations are "Open for Rights-to-Rein" - Similar to eBay, users would place bids using said currency (i.e. Reuse Reward Stars) to secure the right to establish rein or a Kingdom at given Starbucks locations.
The Goal
- Augment My Starbucks Rewards Reuse
- Make container reuse fun and competitive
- Leverage Social Networking to promote container reuse
To establish a Kingdom one must have reached the Gold level (see: https://www.starbucks.com/card/reward). King/Queens rein until "Dethroned by Bid." Defending against impending overthrow requires adding more Stars to the existing value of ones Kingdom. Stars are automatically added to Reining Kings/Queens accounts when reuse occurs - Thus, inherently increasing the value of their Kingdom and decreasing the likelihood of being dethroned when their domain or Starbucks location is open to attack, i.e. "Open for Rights-to-Rein."
Kings and Queens of Starbucks
King/Queen of Starbucks will be an honor marked by privileges, for instance: Head of the line privilege, complimentary beverages/eats, addressed as "Your Highness" by store personnel, etc. Additionally, Kings and Queens may be granted special access to blog within the community as well as have profiles displayed prominently at store location, i.e. their Kingdom.

- I'm not following the bidding system. Are the stars spent (i.e. removed from my account) if I'm successful at bidding to take over a location? What if I'm not successful?
- The bidding process seems a bit complex, and I'm not sure how many people will bid to take over a location if they aren't sure they're going to get it. The nice thing about foursquare is that you check in at a location (3-4 seconds and two or three taps) and it automatically handles everything else.
- Having a set period where the King/Queen can enjoy their privilege is a good idea, but a month is a long time. People aren't going to remember to check in on one day a month to try and take over a store. Every day at a given time (e.g. 12:00 PM), once a week (e.g. Mondays) or a rolling 24-hour rein would get a lot more people engaged and keep the contest exciting.

The concept would have to go through Beta to work the bugs out and determine best practice. So nothing is written in stone.
The goal is to increase the value of ones kingdom to the point where challengers cannot afford to attack or bid to overthrow. If one can effectively mass enough Stars and continue to methodically add value to their Kingdom they would rein theoretically forever or until overthrown or reset. I suspect for popular locations there will be intense competition.

Anyway, If users do not have enough Stars to secure a bid - the current Kingdom will continue to rein until reset or overthrow. The nice thing about this (and similar to Foursquare) is that accumulating Stars is an automatic process: At Check out simply re-use any container and pay with a registered Starbucks transactional card and it's a done deal!

4SQ is a location based service (search "location base services" on the Google) that provides incentive of sorts to individuals who "check-in" or visit a given business. The underlying technology is GPS on cell phones, or mobile devices. Hope that helps. In this instance one would not need a mobile device/GPS to establish a Kingdom at a given SBUX. The Incentive here is being King or Queen of Starbucks which technically would be a big deal - Imagine walking into Starbucks where you rein and being addressed as "Your Highness" and being showered with all sorts of treats = )
