    I like the idea.

    - I'm not following the bidding system. Are the stars spent (i.e. removed from my account) if I'm successful at bidding to take over a location? What if I'm not successful?

    - The bidding process seems a bit complex, and I'm not sure how many people will bid to take over a location if they aren't sure they're going to get it. The nice thing about foursquare is that you check in at a location (3-4 seconds and two or three taps) and it automatically handles everything else.

    - Having a set period where the King/Queen can enjoy their privilege is a good idea, but a month is a long time. People aren't going to remember to check in on one day a month to try and take over a store. Every day at a given time (e.g. 12:00 PM), once a week (e.g. Mondays) or a rolling 24-hour rein would get a lot more people engaged and keep the contest exciting.

As envisioned one does not lose their Stars until there is a game reset - Starbucks would determine reset - perhaps 6months 1year or more or never!

The concept would have to go through Beta to work the bugs out and determine best practice. So nothing is written in stone.

The goal is to increase the value of ones kingdom to the point where challengers cannot afford to attack or bid to overthrow. If one can effectively mass enough Stars and continue to methodically add value to their Kingdom they would rein theoretically forever or until overthrown or reset. I suspect for popular locations there will be intense competition.

This does play well for a demographic that wants ownership and social positioning. It also fosters a sense of starbucks community that may not be present in the grab and go moments. Issues of sustainability and burnout are present, but as a campaign or seasonal issue it may have legs.

@nickgogerty Well stated! In fact I can think of a couple of Starbucks locations here in the City where I live (Seattle) where I would love to Rein as King! Imagine walking into a Starbucks and "subjects" stop what they are doing to acknowledge you - you advance to the front of the line they offer you free pastries and serve up your favorite drink all with a little fan-fair. Regarding sustainability and burnout - I beg to differ (of course I'm biased) - I envision this taking on a life of its own and sustaining itself through its competitiveness and marketing potential - Also remember the endeavor can be "Reset" - As envisioned a reset can last days - weeks - months or even years - In a sense it would allows users to amass as many Stars as possible before bidding opens. Moreover, this is designed to augment "My Starbucks Rewards Reuse" (see above) - i.e. "Container Reuse" - it's not intended to stand alone.

@jblevinson - Tagging back to your question/concern regarding the "bidding process" there are a number of "out-of-box" or "hosted" bidding or auction solutions that would streamline the process. eBay might even work - technically real currency does not exchange hands, so it would be free.

Anyway, If users do not have enough Stars to secure a bid - the current Kingdom will continue to rein until reset or overthrow. The nice thing about this (and similar to Foursquare) is that accumulating Stars is an automatic process: At Check out simply re-use any container and pay with a registered Starbucks transactional card and it's a done deal!

I don't get this foursquare thing... I read the article... I went to their FB page.. I think I should take that nap that I was suppose to taking.

Anyone care to simply explain it for me?

Well this is why I suspect I do not have many hits here because folk like you don't get it = )
4SQ is a location based service (search "location base services" on the Google) that provides incentive of sorts to individuals who "check-in" or visit a given business. The underlying technology is GPS on cell phones, or mobile devices. Hope that helps. In this instance one would not need a mobile device/GPS to establish a Kingdom at a given SBUX. The Incentive here is being King or Queen of Starbucks which technically would be a big deal - Imagine walking into Starbucks where you rein and being addressed as "Your Highness" and being showered with all sorts of treats = )

I get it... I know about LBS... I just couldn't make the connection with the whole King/Queen status part. I like the idea of being Queen $h!t as soon as I walk into the place... and of course I'm all about being showered with treats! Ummmm .... that's what girls are all about! Bring it!

Hey....what did you mean by .... "folk like you"? lol

Ah, I guess this is the answer to my question concerning your King/Queen of Cups... I like the gaming aspect of your idea (as far as I got it - just another of that folk...). It would be fun to be Queen of my coffeehouse. Such an annoyance that we don´t have any in my little hometown. :o(

Yeah imagine walking into you local SBUX and the Batista's scuttle you to the head of the line - offer you samples of this and that - after explaining to other customers who you are = )
