Sorry it took me so long to get back to everyone. The regional distribution could cut down on transportation costs along with the ability to ship cups more efficiently due to the shape. As for the "local" printing, it could all be done in one place before distribution. Whatever was going to be on the cup could be sent in before printing. Sponsors who seek advertisement for concerts etc. could sponsor the cup to help offset the costs. In the example of advertising a volunteering campaign it might not make sense for them to sponsor the cup production because it would most likely be a non-profit type organization. Starbucks willingness to advertise events benefiting the community like that would show their interest in becoming more a part of the community they are serving.

Hopefully i'll have some time to put in some updates by tuesday.

I think although it could cost slightly more to produce the cup, the benefits outweigh the cost. Companies that are seen as 'going green' and are involved in giving back to their local communities always beats out other companies. I believe that since Starbucks already has such strong brand recognition that they are one of the few companies that could indulge in something like this & really hit the ground running with it.

I love the idea and hope it is carried out!

I like the idea of "Starbucks Local" where the sustainable materials are produced regionally. The southeast would be sugar cane, and I imagine other parts of the country would be corn-based or wood pulp-based products. This has an advantage over ideas that ask consumers to carry cups around with them because, of course, Starbucks would stock the cups and the consumer can participate immediately without having to bring his or her own cup. A disadvantage comes on the operational side, where Starbucks would (likely) have to deal with different materials and (potentially) suppliers for different parts of the country, and I don't know how this idea works internationally. Do Canadian Starbucks have to use Canadian materials? If they don't, does that work against the "Starbucks Local" idea?

Your well thought out presentation allowed me to understand the concept easily. When you think about how different each state and region of the US is, the idea of tailoring manufacturing and advertising in a more localized way is very smart. And I love the artist/ collectable cup concept!

Really original idea! My only concern is quality control. Starbucks wants all customers to receive the same high grade of service that it is known for no matter where they are located. If you start changing materials per region, there may be a cost - not only in shipping and stocking these cups, but in name and product recognition, Familiarity with the product (the way it looks, feels, smells, etc.) is very comforting to the customer. Would different cup materials affect the taste of the coffee? These are just some things to consider. But overall, a great "outside the box" idea!

i really like this idea. I've seen few submissions about biodegradable materials so i'm not sure which one is really the best. But certainly, your submission is enticing. Though i'm a believer in reuse, so far i haven't seen any solutions that will make everyone switch to reusables. Maybe instead, it's a combination of both types of submissions i see on the website. For the people who will reuse and for people who won't. There are many good ideas here... from foldable reusable cups to biodegradables to financial incentives, a true solution will be to combination of all of them!

The 'local' aspects of this are really interesting- and the presentation is really great. Good luck! Whatever the biodegradable material it is that is identified- I really hope it is pursued as a result of this competition.

Hi there, I think that your local-aspect is good thinking, but also I think that it might be hard to implement. Is not Starbucks and other companies a like the opposite to "local"? Due to cutting costs, stuff are produced on a certain placed and then ship around the world. But I agree with your philosophy, if every Starbuck could be localized and self-supported within it's region it would be better for the environment. It would be great if Starbucks could strive against being more local in general. Nice presentation and good thinking.
