I've read somewhere that people who go on diets which cut out 30% of calories are more likely to stick to them than those who try to cut out just 10% of calories. I wouldn't put too much weight on this (no pun intended), but I wonder whether we could encourage people to reduce waste across a lot of different areas at the same time?
A planet pack would contain:
- A reusable coffee mug, lid and sleeve
- A reusable water bottle
- Reusable paper towels
- A lunch pack, e.g. a fabric cooler-style lunchpack
- Three reusable foldaway bags for grocery shopping in different designs - perhaps string bags?
- A solid shopping bag/tote - organic fairtrade.
- Two long-life light bulbs, in countries where they have not been widely adopted
- Fridge jugs, for water and milk
- Further promotions for rechargeable batteries, electricity monitors, insulation, Amazon Kindle, EcoKettle, white goods etc.
- A charitable donation
- Some seeds to grow
- A bar of fairtrade chocolate
- Fairtrade coffee
- Samples of Ecover or Method products
- A couple of little books on the environment and making further changes
- Membership of a club
The pack would look gorgeous, and come in a few different styles. The prices would be attractive.
These could be ordered online, with things not needed automatically deducted from the package.
The products themselves are only a small part of the story, however - for a full view about how to reduce Coffee Cup Pollution, see: http://www.jovoto.com/contests/drink-sustainably/ideas/5046

I see two ways you could approach this concept:
-Package the whole thing up in a box and put it on shelves in various big-box retailers
-Have an a la carte online ordering system where you can tick the boxes of the items you want and it would be custom built, then sent to you or a recipient as a gift.
No reason you couldn't do both, I suppose.
Other than putting the products in people's hands, any ideas for encouraging them to use them? What kind of club membership were you thinking about?

I might approach Amazon and see if they would put a pack or microsite together? I know that they have pages for different brands don't they? If it was on Amazon, people could choose whatever they'd like. What do you think?
Apparently Christmas box sets are also a major market - I think I remember someone from the Dragon's Den television programme in the UK saying that people had become a (£) millionaire just from a single box set idea.
Perhaps anyone who's interested in taking certain ideas forward can keep in touch after the competition? I'll e-mail Toby from BetaCup about mailing lists etc.
