There are two important component to this puzzle: sustainability and disposability. The two are often opposed to each other. My solution brings the two together. It's also a time-tested one.
I was born in India, and grew up drinking tea at train stations from cups that were both environmentally SUSTAINABLE and DISPOSABLE. They were CLAY CUPS. In the United States we always go for high-tech solutions that over time tend to be injurious to health as well as environment. A clay cup can be as cheaply made as a regular cup available in coffee shops but once broken it becomes earth from where it had earlier emerged.
