Your resource is a great one since this PO market is likely to grow steadily, thereby the waste as well.

About coffee-to-go: who ends up at home or at a(nother) Starbucks store when they finish their coffee? Just like Janne points out: hardly anybody. Waste will spread, now it is just other waste, that degrades only at special locations.

Great product. This material can even be used in many of the cup proposals submitted by others.

I love the idea of a biodegradable cup.... A great idea if everyone was responsible enough to properly dispose of it... but if someone is going to the office , rather than home... chances of them holding on to their dirty cups and transporting them home to their compost is slim.

Also, it sticks out in my mind that palm plantations for palm oil and it's by products are one of the biggest contributors to deforestation of rain forests and habitat depletion.

Thank you Melissa for your great comments. My response to you and to Janne (above) regarding behavior change is that you have to start somewhere.

When the supermarkets brought in their policies to stop using plastic bags or start charging for them, it made people change their behavior-- they started bringing their own.

The state of the environment now has occurred because we have all become collectively lazy and opt for the convenient, throw away option. By introducing a financial penalty (or reward...because I'm Canadian and I think that way) to change a behavior will hopefully have some impact.

Saying that we shouldn't implement this cup (or any of the home compostable cups in this contest) until the "infrastructure" (both human and physical) is in place is postponing the changes that we needed to make yesterday when it comes to environmental care.

Hi Melissa, sorry I also see that you raise a great question about the sustainability of the palm oil industry.

True, there are areas of the world and participants in the industry that are contributing to de-forestation. It is an unfortunate fact and one that we do not support or condone.

There is a multi-stakeholder organization called the Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil (www.rspo.org) which created a definition and an auditing structure for what is considered "sustainable". Without going into the details, we hired SGS, one of the independent auditors recognized by the RSPO to review our source inputs in relation to "high conservation value forest" and animal habitat destruction, land ownership and use of agrochemicals. We can safely say that our plantation has not contributed to deforestation, kicked people off their land or removed animal habitat. For more on this topic, you can see our white paper on our website (www.earthcycle.com).

Our operations are located in West Malaysia-- most of the deforestation and questionable practices are happening in other areas.

Great design! Really love the colors.

I think the look of the cup plays an important role. It serves as a visual cue and subtle reminder to recycle.

Single use, recyclable cups are the way to go. It's an easy solution that can be implemented right away.

I love Earthcyle and all that they stand for. And this cup idea should simple be legislated into law. Enough said.

Really love your cup design, presentation and idea layout. Questions though: How labor intensive is this process? How economical would it be for Starbucks to acquire new machinery for manufacturing of these cups? The process of making the cups, eco friendly itself?

    thank you

May I ask that you review and rate my idea also?

I dont want trash in my garden, and what about people living in appartments. ;)
The though is good but sorry not great. There are to many things you havn't solved. You still need to produce the same amount cups every year.
