Making something out of sugar and corn does not automatically make it "eco-friendly"; corn takes a lot of water and fertilizer to grow, as well as land. You also need to take into account all the energy needed to process the corn into the material you're talking about. Then, there's the issue of your corn products competing against food production.

1. Water resource
2.Food scarcity
3.Food allergy
4.Waste management
1.Water resource.
I came across a quote " to reach the perfect don't kill the good".
Current scenario is not avoid the substance which pollute the earth and deforestation. And also the amount of energy used to create the products that will be used and thrown within an hour is far more painful than to use energy that will create something edible. As per the law of minimalism "use what you want, take what you need" and make best use of what you have. Any way you can't eat a paper cup .
2.Food scarcity.
Money pays them everything. but money isn't everything. money pays them for food. So most use the land to produce more corn which will be used for many biodegradable products like cups, paper, bags, etc exploiting their cultivatable land(wheat/rice). we better consume than dispose.
3.Food scarcity.
I also propose my cups to be made using paddy paste and fried in oil(based on a cookie). which will be an another alternative to corn products.
Paddy cup would solve the problem
4.Waste management.
The products made from PLA/PMS processing is not grown fully enough that i can be recycled back to new PLA/PMS products. We need to find a cure soon and fast or shift to reusable/consumable products.

Producing PSM cups/coffee tea like bags might be more energy efficient than we might think. I believe the infrastructure is already here and being used. PSM cups, utensils, medical supplies have been in production for about five to six years now. Also, automakers are building cars flex fuel capable; ethanol (E85) which is derived from corn.
Knowing that, hints me to think coffee companies would be more likely to adopt already existing and proven manufacturing methods than to venture off into exploring manufacturing methods still in their genesis.
just my two cents,
