Interesting idea, however what if you are in an area where these specially marked bins are not, where are you going to discard the cup? and who picks up these bins, the coffee shop or the city's waste management?

I've rated! its a good idea though ;)

The feasibility of your approach certainly comes down to the participants' cost benefit ratio. Participating shops probably wouldn't want to shell out large sums in advance to possibly enhance their "green" image.
Thus, convincing the government to push the project would be a factor for sure.

A good deal of the budget could be recovered by selling the containers' surface as a space for related (or unrelated) advertisements*.
How about mounting the containers on the back of regular public trash cans? That way they could be emptied by the local garbage collection for minimized fees..
    Good luck!

*That could in fact be a profitable long-term business in itself ;-)

JascharVossoug, great ideas. Selling advertising space would definitely make the solution more feasible, and "piggybacking" on existing garbage collection systems would decrease the overall cost of the solution as you mentioned.

gracetombe, the system is not fool proof as you rightly point out, but reducing the amount of cups not recycled by half (29 Billion) would make a significant difference.

    Thanks

The problem I see with this idea is that the paper cups are not recyclable to begin with. The insides of the cups are coated with a petroleum based wax to make the cups water-proof from the inside. If they were merely paper, recycling wouldn't be an issue, but they wouldn't be usable for holding hot coffee either.

Your idea would only work if the cups were entirely made of a recyclable material.

The other problem with this idea is that the company adopting this now has to keep track of millions of customer's cup usage. This is a pretty big data handling operation, with a lot of IT overhead. Is this going to be cost effective?

Berkana, as you rightly point out the system is dependent on a 100% recyclable cup similar to many of the entries we have seen in this competition. The problem with only introducing a recyclable or bio degradable cup is that the issue of where these cups end up is still not resolved. Bio-degradable cups mixed with other non degradable garbage is not really going to make a big difference.

I think issues in dealing with data when millions of customers have adopted this systems can be overcome. Think of the impact when so many customers do join.

This is very interesting idea. If this idea is combined with other concepts of reducing the cup size, customer will be able to carry to back to the place where specially marked bins are kept.
Usually the time period for the coffee cup varies from a few min to 2-3 hours. So special bins can be distributed in 2 hours zone to enable wide area coverage.

    I like your concept.
We can try bar code reader in bins rather than RFID in cup. Bar code would be cost effective,i guess.
    Whats your view?

sakthikannan, thanks for the feedback. Placing a bar code scanner in each bin might be a bit of a challenge in terms of cost and servicing. A scan system at the factory makes it a whole lot easier logistically.

The basic idea revolves more around the business opportunity and takes a holistic view of the cup's life cycle.

Good idea, voted for you. Commenting from IT perspective, the tracking portion/program might add a relatively large overhead, as an idea maybe have umbrella loyalty program to include all recyclable goods. Also wondering if bar code sticker could be much cheaper than RFID?

Disclaimer - My business partner created this idea so I can't claim credit yet; maybe when it has won...

I love the idea because it has a system-wide approach. Sure it can be improved but this is a great start. The fact that it combines well with cup-specific ideas is awesome.
