Good point. I think it definitely could be implemented in a non-subscription basis. ie if the customer merely buys a standard "trade-in" cup and they constantly use this one they purchased for "checking" in and out.

However, I think the key to the member service is not only the practicality of it, but also about changing the way the customer thinks about coffee and its relationship with Starbucks. By removing the per unit cash exchange, it becomes more about the experience and less purely about the product, in this case coffee. Starbucks or whichever company it may be is now adding intangible value to their product.

Also, if the goal is to get consumers to use less disposable cups, tying them to a membership encourages this because they know they have "banked" cups they have to use for the week.

If the cup exchange and cash exchange occurs on each cup of coffee, the gain the consumer yields is only on the cost reduction and the washing. Although, the washing isn't insignificant, I believe there is a threshold at which customers will change behavior. My personal opinion is that threshold wouldn't be met with purely a small cost reduction and washing and would be met with the "banked" or "credited" cup achieved through the membership. This motivation is analogous to Frequent Flier programs. Thousands choose future purchasing decisions, based upon their past purchasing decisions as reflected by their banked "miles."

Admittedly though, I think both approaches could have a good impact and could be quickly tested.

@JayMax. Yeah, the cups used would be one standard cup. So all of those members will merely exchange the dirty cup for the same cup that has already been washed. Starbucks would need to keep an inventory of those cups ready to go. No waiting needed.

Also, the service levels can be adjusted to where it makes sense from a segmentation aspect based upon the Starbucks data.

    Thanks for the feedback.

i think this is a great idea and wonder if it could be tied in to their starbucks cards that are already in circulation - turning them into loyalty cards. also, adding in an incentive-based rewards program for active users would be nice. something like - go a whole month with the exchange program and get a free cup of coffee on us.

I agree with @ksarendain. I believe you get reward points for using a Starbucks card; same could apply for using the MyCup. Do most coffee houses not already reward customers with discounts for bringing reusable cups? I think that would definitely be an incentive. I actually like the membership concept, as it would also play well into the Starbucks card system, and really, you're wanting to target the regular customers who are the highest consumers of the disposable cups. Most importantly.. I'm awful at washing my dishes. I'll take a clean MyCup every day, thank you very much!

Great idea and hopefully it can be implemented soon! I feel like a jackass every time I use a paper cup.

I was thinking on the same line. But i felt maintaining huge inventory of cups of individual will be a cause of concern. And labor can be reduced by using many automated cleaner proposed in the contest.
If u r going for a common cup.Paper cup was introduce to remove common cup. is people ready to go back?

@sakthikannan I think people are ready for this as any time you go and sit down at a restaurant you are using washed cups, plates and utensils.

I like the way you worded your idea - it sounds very inviting. Oh, Sx is cleaning my dirty cup? What a great service. I´d join in. I also like that you focus on the frequent customer - you are right, they are the ones that produce most of the trash...

I think this is a well thought out idea, but I am not sure that I would want to spend money on a subscription service that will only give me longer lines and wash my cup. I mean, Starbucks is a high price-point item to begin with. And to be honest, what is the big deal about washing a cup? A little hot water, a little soap, and you're done!
Even though I personally wouldn't use this service, I see that you have put a lot of work into this and this is definitely a marketable idea. I'll gladly vote for you!

@KDragonBlend. Thanks for your comment. One important point is that the service won't wash your cup on when you trade it in. There would be an inventory of pre-washed cups. So no extra waiting. The trade-in cups would then be washed along with the in-house cups and returned to the inventoried cups. Thanks for everybody's votes!
