    You're talking about fibre cement boards? Like the old asbestos boards- if i got you rightt...

    Good idea, it's a good material. Could have proposed some casting forms that offer static function within the element as well, e.g. a web on each side where you could fix the elemts together and at this connection point some kind of pillar is created..

    Sorry for my english, probably you'll miss what i mean ;)

    The presentation is nice somehow, but to be honest, it could be a little bit more teasing in this competition and it's missing a real design proposal. Anyway, for later use it's quite a good approach for building material development.

    Design proposal:
    A 4 meter x 4 meter enclosed, roofed living space with front roofed porch for social interaction (a necessary social-ecological approach), and a rear "utility" roofed porch for shower, toilet (composting), and service sink.
    This would be the minimum humane, dignified home we propose for less priviledged people in the world. Notice we don't use "slum dwellers", "poor", etc. to identify these folks because of the negative connotations of the words.

    your welcomed... glad I could help. I think the process is ideal for Central and South America. I might also suggest using thremally modified wood. I might be too pricing but it would really add to the preformance. You have my vote for the most practical idea that could be scaled.

    Please look at my idea. I know Mr.MB thinks it is unfeasbile. He is likely right - at least as the idea that stands alone based on a single global solution. With the correct board and system we can make this work for the Americas. My team includes only a three others but we have world class equipment and testing in our lab. We also have a close collaboration with Rosenheim University's program in Nicaragua. I also have worked with a retired diamond miner from Guyana. He asked me to recreate an old French patent for a board made with sea shells, bast and hurd fiber, and an inorganic binder. Plus I have a couple of contacts with USAID. Our three areas of expertise are building systems, inoranigic fiber composites, and modified wood. I am certain you have developed great recipes. I am also certain I can help optimized the recipe - in both fiber geometery and inorganic binders such as ASHRAM EcoCment. We also believe we can help with engineering the framing. Not sure what is next but I will encourage everyone I can to vote 10 for you.

      Thank you for your comments, leads and interest in the product. We have taken note of them and will be contacting them. We would like to know more about the project in Nicaragua.. Where are you guys located?

      Your idea sounds great, especially in the approach it takes to use materials/debris form the dwellings you seek to improve/rebuild. How these can be used/implemented and how feasible ..... not sure. We have voted already. Most (probably all) of the ideas have some work ahead and certainly improvement possibilities....Best of luck!

    Be nice if jivoto could have a few categories. There are some good ideas to bring component manufacturing into the economy of the urban slum but have no design for the housing. Would be great if the idea owners could pick a category rather than just lumping it a together.

    There are also really good ideas to improve the social structure in these urban slums. Would be awful if all these necessary components were lost in choosing the "winning design".

    Hi there , your idea is pretty interesting, specifically the use of recycle materials in the construction process. In this moment I have been working in a social business plan with Artemisia which aims to offer modular houses for the most unprivileged inhabitants in the Bogota slums in Colombia. Therefore, we want to find the approach to involved in the production process the slums dwellers by recollecting recycle materials which can be used in the house production. The project seeks to generated income generation activities together with living conditions improvements . I will really appreciated any source of information that you reckon will be useful.

      Thank you for your comments! The concretabla material/building process was available in Colombia (it was developed in Bogota). Currently it is not available, but there are some Concretabla houses built in the past. Please let us know more about the project and Artemisia.

      Thank you for your replay. Let me start talking about Artemisia. It is kind of NGo who supports social business projects, there is the web page http://www.artemisia.org.br/eng/rede.php. So in this moment we are competing in a social business competition. The idea is based in providing prefabricated houses at the lowest cost possible at the inhabitants of the unprivileged towns. In that regard we propose at some suppliers to sell us this input material at production cost and then we hire a specialized manufactures to produce those houses. Then we set groups of five families that will support each other. At the beginning just one family will receive a house loan. Once the house repayment have past sort of period that we haven´t determined yet, other family get other house loan. But here is the key issue, taking into account that most of these people are lacking a reliable job, how will the project encourage income generation activities?. On the ground of that, we aim to involved at the beneficiaries in some of the business activities such as commercializing the prefabricated houses in the slums and supporting the building process. Furthermore, we are seeking to know if there is the likelihood to get the input materials of the prefabricated houses by recycling initiatives. So, the beneficiaries can profit with this and simultaneously we can improve the waste collection matter affecting most of the slums in Bogotá.

      I will really appreciate your feedback and any advice that you can provide me.

    I think this is a very good idea. Cement is usually, relatively, cheap and available and wood makes a good filler. I also agree with Treeman that the Eltomation technology is very viable for certain areas. Best of luck in the competition!

    A house for $ 300 ?? No way for $ 300. Well, not a HOUSE. I don't see it. BUT good concept, and doable. Back to the drawing board to come up with a house that answers to the $ 300. It probably can be done, but I don't belive the $300 the way ot is presented. But is can be done .....

    I think this is an excellent idea! I have reviewed some of the other concepts with a good feedback. Concretabla seems to provide for flexibility and any variations possible as to materials used, end-users involvement in manufacturing and assembling, up-grading, scaling-up, etc. I know it has been copied for it´s feasibility by other firms. It seems to be safe for earthquakes and an option for migrating people, because they can dissemble it and take it with them. As far as I know, it has been implemented in South America and the Caribbean. Finally: it just looks beautiful, cosy and safe.
