love the idea, it could work, and is not involve much waste of material, considering the reduced number of produced cups. From me you have an 8.
also hope the cup will not collapse when is full :)

A lot of great comments, and I agree. I would suggest teaming up with some of the other collapsable cup proposals to work towards a superb solution. Consider:

Klean Kanteen is stainless steel, but it's heat transfer is horrible. Mine get's instantly hot or cold pending on what I put in there.

@Dunnion - that's because it's a single layer of steel, which conducts heat extremely well. Vacuum flasks (including the ones by Klean Kanteen in their Wide Insulated line) have two layers and keep the heat/cold inside.

@brynn Cheers for the feedback. Will check out the others!

Well I'm not a fan of the collapsible cup look but you are the first to mention it so I give you credit there. It does have a "dated" pill cup look to it but your thinking in the right direction... go small to improve on convenience.

I really like the cap/lid and how it makes it self-contained. The tolerances from a manufacturing perspective could be difficult. Unlike the living hinges in the plastic molded versions of these articulating cups, you'll have to really be good with these tolerances. I don't know what's more expensive to manufacture - something like this or something blow molded.

I have voted for you idea. Our retries are a step forward towards a greener planet with less waste. Please have a look at my idea and I greatly appreciate your opinion http://www.jovoto.com/contests/drink-sustainably/ideas/5237

How much would this cost the consumer? Because I drop things...A LOT!!! I'd be really mad if I kept breaking such an awesome cup! Nice job!

i'd love to see this taken to the next level of detail.

am concerned about heat transfer and locking.

    most importantly though:
electronics have huge carbon footprints (and water too i think) so i'd highly suggest
losing that functionality. circuit board, screen, battery etc.. will make the footprint
of a paper cup look like nothing in comparison.
