On as little as 100 square meters of land, people could harvest enough bamboo every year to construct their own housing, furniture and other necessities. Its growth has been measured reaching skyward as fast as 47 ½ inches per 24-hour period, and it has been known to reach a growth rate exceeding 39 inches per hour for short periods of time. Bamboo has a long history of use in Asian furniture and its distinct style based on millennia long tradition. Bamboo is nutritious, the shoots, (new bamboo culms that come out of the ground) are edible. They are used in numerous Asian dishes and broths, and are available in supermarkets in various sliced forms, both fresh and canned version. Bamboo charcoal contains numerous tiny pores that can absorb chlorine, chemical materials and little pesticide residue in the water. This ancient wisdom is still used today in carbon water filters like Brita and Pur.
