My design for a low-cost self-build emergency structure is hexagonal in plan. It is a tent-like structure with a photo voltaic cell-faced solar pod on the roof. All principal facets of the structure are framed with flexible plastic piping that is bent round into parabolic shapes. Fabric infill skins, comprising plasticated fabric-faced woodwool insulation, are stretched between the frames. The windows and door have roller blinds; and clip-on, cable-secured, lightweight, PVCu frames. These frames would have a bright colour to ease identification of location in a mass grouping. The hexagonal units can be clustered into multiple shelters. Rainwater would be collected in the periphery of the stretched rubber sheet roof. This roofing would be tied into the hexagonal perimeter frame of the roof. This rainwater would be filtered for drinking purposes. Inside the shelter, there would be a chemical toilet compartment at the back; a sink; asolar-powered kitchen cooker; and roll-out mattress beds that would roll up and reconfigure to chairs in the daytime. The flooring wood be hessian and woodwool matting.
