corrugated steel house
Corrugated steel housing for residents of urban slums

Solution

RUMAH is a safe, economic, and materially efficient housing solution
for residents of urban slums worldwide. Designed as a quickly-shipped,
self-sufficient unit that can withstand natural disasters and extreme
weather, Rumah can be used for disaster relief.

However, the strength of the design comes from aggregating units into
family homes, and to form communities with semi-private spaces to
live, work, and play. We also propose an economic model for
encouraging the growth of strong communities, while preserving
individual pride of ownership.

Each unit is built from 32 square meters of corrugated steel, a
material that provides both structure and protection, using a
manufacturing process that minimizes waste. The structure is
flat-packed for shipping, can be built on-site in a day, and
customized with local materials. Steel is available at low cost
throughout the world, maintains strength for many years, and can be
re- or up-cycled, or reused to create new homes.
