Heart over heels
Germany — the lovely and football-crazy host in the center of Europe.

Solution

Germany is willing to bring people from all over Europe together to celebrate an event of joy and cordiality. All this in the continent’s center, in harmony with its near and far neighbours and in the name of football, peace and hospitality.

Please describe the creative approach you took to your design

After lots of experimenting with the symbols and shapes, this design became the one that is more than the sum of its parts. The next challenge was to come up with a visuality that fits the tonality mentioned in the briefing. The solution was to make it “engaging” and “open” like a sketchbook work (which also supports the work-in-progress character of a bid) as well as to make it “professional” and “confident” with a technical typography (which also refers to well-known German engineering).

Please explain how you incorporated the messages, values and mandatory elements outlined above into your design

The heart-headed and tricoloured star symbolizes Germany by its flag and its location on the continent. There a few ways to interpret the icon. First of all you will probably see a football player leading the ball or preparing for a shot. But you can also see a fan cheering for her or his team or a host spreading her or his arms for a welcome hug. Either way, the emotion and motion are strong with this one.

Why should your design become the logo for the bidding phase?

Because it is unique, significant and applicable to all kinds of media. Or, as German design legend Kurt Weidemann would say: “A logo is a good logo if you can draw it in the sand with your toe.”
