Interactive Book Installations
Breaking barriers between books and digital content using haptic perception and gesture recognition.

Solution

This idea is combinable and rearrangable (see applied images) and scales very well to every context. My favorite arrangement is a showcase box with a pitched book with empty pages inside. A transparent multitouch screen covers the front of the box. If someone steps in front of the screen it shows covers of available ebooks. On tapping a cover, the pages are projected on the empty pages. Eye tracking defines the right angle for projection. One can flip pages using a gesture on the multitouch LCD.

What is the core principle of your idea?

Breaking barriers between books and digital content using haptic perception and gesture recognition. Digital Content get's much more attention if it is applied to haptic things in the real world. This idea is not about a specifc installation, but about the right interactive installation for a specific use case.

Can your idea be applied to different formats (in a bookstore, at a trade fair, at a conference)?

Book Store or Trade Fair Situation: Reader can place a book on a study desk which recognizes which paper book the reader has placed and synchronizes an ebook on a screen (idea scales very well) Book Store or Trade Fair Situation: Window projection which changes book page when passenger passes via XBOX Kinect and Translucent Foil for window projection;
Conference Situation: a moderator browzes a book library and/or a book on a canvas using hand gestures (good for deaf-mutes, too)

Would it be possible to turn your idea into a reality, or at least create a prototype of it, at short notice, i.e. by the Frankfurt Book Fair in October 2014?

Yes, it is possible. Some installations needs a prove of concept and you need a small team of 1 or 2 developers, firm in vvvv or openframeworks and a talented and creative craftsman, who builds the installations. Depending on which installation you prefer, you need some hardware, e.g.: LEAP Motion https://www.leapmotion.com; transparent multitouch display or LCD showcase: http://bit.ly/UxqZUx ; XBOX Kinect; WebCam; PC; Translucent Foil for window projection or plexiglass panel; furniture...

What do you estimate the costs for the prototype or the final implementation of your idea to be?

The price of an exhibition piece depends on the requirements, scope and which one you want to build. Some installations needs prove of concept. The costs for developing software, building the pieces and gluing the hardware together for minimal setup starts at 10.000 € and this needs to be done once for a use case. You need at least 3.000 € for hardware, construction material, furniture and other equipment. The sky is the limit (price, brilliance, features, effort, details, crowd puller effect)
