Books and bookstores represent a charismatic idea. It breathes adventure, romance, culture. But it also represents a certain peace. Peace to loose yourself in a new world, with new rules, new people. No distraction. And that's what we should achieve with it's digital version. Also: you don't have to present digital content in a digital way. Why think of expensive, digital solutions when people allready have sophisticated devices?
What is the core principle of your idea?
My solution is about the book and the bookstore (or event):
1) build an app (to read, like iBooks). Whenever I open this app, I want all notifications to disappear. To mute. I need radiosilence. 2) Bookstore displays. We can create custom designs for each genre. On that display we place bookholders. On that bookholder a code (QR, perhaps). Scan that code with the app, from step 1, and you can read a preview. In the bookstore, or at home. Like the book? Buy it on the spot.
Can your idea be applied to different formats (in a bookstore, at a trade fair, at a conference)?
Yes. It can be up- or downgraded on any scale.
Would it be possible to turn your idea into a reality, or at least create a prototype of it, at short notice, i.e. by the Frankfurt Book Fair in October 2014?
Yes, very easy. Card board stands. The fair could be a mural (a big design that culd be printed). Or it's build up with different book covers. The labels could be made pretty easy. The app could even come later (redirect to iBooks first?)
What do you estimate the costs for the prototype or the final implementation of your idea to be?
No idea. An app, designs, prints, logistics, etc. With the app, I guess around 80.000 EUR, without the app 40.000 EUR. But that's a wild guess.
