Background

Japan has suffered a triple tragedy. In the days and weeks ahead, the country and its people need all the assistance they can get to help them back on their feet and to start rebuilding too many broken lives and homes.

jovoto is teaming up with the AIGA student group of the Academy of Arts University to give their global creative community the chance to contribute by donating their time and artistic talents in an effort to raise funds for this beloved nation.

Task Definition

We’re hosting an open call for posters and artwork around the theme 'Arise' and it’s present context to Japan and the disaster, or broadly its culture and its people.

Because this challenge is a chance for everyone to contribute to a great cause, we’re offering the top rated submission the chance to be exhibited at a gallery space in San Francisco. In order to raise money there will be a fundraiser organized around the event. In addition, the top 5 designs will be sold online as special edition 18”x24” prints.

All of the money that is raised from the challenge will go to the Japan Society, from where it will be distributed to specific relief efforts in the affected areas. The Society is working with four NPOs: Tokyo Volunteer Network for Disaster Relief, JEN, Entrepreneurial Training for Innovative Communities (ETIC), and the Japan NPO Center, all of whom are on the front lines of relief and recovery. Currently they’ve managed to raise over $3,000,000 since the tragedy and we hope through contributing our talents we can raise a little more to help those who most need it.

Rewards:

  • The Top 5 Community Winners will have their prints sold online on a site that will be shared later on in the challenge
  • The Top 25 Community Winners will all be exhibited on the online store as well at a gallery in San Francisco in early May.

*All funds from the online store and exhibition will be sent to the Japan Society.

Cassandra_Cappello ! Super idea ! Good luck !

Thanks! I am so happy that the challenge has gotten off to such a good start. : )

it is a very great challenge !

it seems the greatest challenge of all for jovoto will be designing beyond a red dot

it rearly semms like that! :-)

I agree, it seems like the contest task is " A hundred different ways of lifting a red dot ", of course me included, but we have just started : D

i have a black square :)

Hey guys check out the video briefing if you have not already seen it !

Hey everyone check out the gallery information that has been added to the brief:

The gallery show will open Thursday May 5,hang until Saturday May 7 at the Academy of Art Atelier, 79 New Montgomery St., San Francisco.

hey jovoto- there is more to a nation than a flag. if you aren't willing to look any further, then not only aren't you going to get anywhere as a designer. you won't get anywhere as a human being. so let's get past the flag please.

Hey Everybody!

I have an idea but no time to work on it. Do you know "THE LOTUS SUTRA" ?

In japanese its "Myoho-Renge-Kyo". Its one of the oldest sacred sutras and one of the most important buddhist peaces of wisdom. It encourages people faith in their wisdom, no matter what situation there are in.

The lotus flower grows in mud and dirt. Its a symbol for that in any shit or disaster in your life the seed or fertilizer to grow and change is lying inside. Even if you might not see it yet.

Go for it, if you like. Best from Berlin!

Yours Jesko

If this is what Open Zone stands for I will never be part of it again.

A remotely Japanese person is bashing ideas,

... and is contributing ideas himself...

Can you explain what you mea please?

[/SATIRE] ask texastee for details

i 'm sorry but am i the only one who finds it pathetic to tell a bunch of people to come and rate high a specific idea? :) Me, myself would be a little embaraseed to do that. It's totally unfair to the efforts, time and creativity of the others. is this the neo-hacking of the creativity or what whatever :(

yes you are right, I see it too.

I don´t get it, what are you refering to ?

I think that everybody must express themselves the way they really feel. The think is that "freewill" word is at it's all....! Do not interfere this way because by me, myself and I think that people must judge their own without comments and smart words.

opoios exei ti muga, mugiazetai :)

i remembered this from when i was programming my game for the deutsche telekom contest. i was using it as a sample of how to use the scripting language.

but if any you get frustrated about the way this contest is going, then it is fun to play his simple avoid the red dot game. share and enjoy.

Hello folk,

yesterday I saw a beautiful sunset with the red sun. It was pitty, I didn't have a camera with me at that moment. I think, the idea with the sunset and the red sun is going to be something interesting. I would be verry glad if someone of you would be able realise it. I do not have enough time.

Best wishes

AS I INFORMED FROM THE CONTEST GUIDER THE “HINOMARU IS ARISING” POSTER IS GOING TO BE REMOVED BECAUSE OF THE SIMILARITY IT HAS WITH ANOTHER POSTER OF THE 'HELP JAPAN' PROJECTS. I RESPECT THIS DECISION ALTHOUGH I BELIEVE THAT SIMILARITY IN ARTS IS SOMETHING THAT VERY OFTEN HAPPENS… IS LIKE TRYING TO FIND WHICH OF THE CAVE DRAWINGS ,THAT REPRESENT PEOPLE HUNTING ANIMALS AND THERE ARE ALL OVER THE WORLD, IS ORIGINAL… I HONESTLY SAY THAT “HINOMARU IS ARISING” IS A POSTER CREATED AND NOT COPIED!

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR SUPPORTING THIS WORK WITH YOUR COMMENTS AND VOTES!

SGOUROS

it wouldn't be possible for the contest organizers to legally display or sell a poster which contains content already owned elsewhere. so there is nothing to cry about. it wouldn't have solved the main goal, even if you were allowed to win the contest with it.

WHAT YOU SAY IS RIGHT TEIGAN... ALL I HOPE IS THAT, THIS POSTER WILL BE EQUAL WITH EVERY POSTER OF THIS CONTEST THAT IS SIMILAR WITH OTHERS! PS: I PREFER TRYING THAN CRYING

me too sgouros. i noticed there are other posters that look too much like prior art off platform. i'm hoping those people will come forward like you and do the honourable thing. i doubt it though, and there could be unpleasant consequences for japan society at a later date.

I have contacted all of those that links have been found online. Any other links that have been posted have also been contacted. We are making sure that there are no situations where other artist work are being taken advantage of.

yes i know. but i also know that community members are your customers too, and the customer is always right. it is up to them to follow through on your requests. you can't force them to do anything nor would you want to unless third party legal threats arrived addressed to jovoto.

i have a suggestion that will make everyone happier. would it be possible to print and sell an extra poster featuring all of our work scaled down and tiled to fit? i think it would make a nice companion piece to put the winning posters into context. i'm sure cassandra can negotiate and make it happen if we just voice interest.

not to be confused with the jovoto feces

I have reached out and the idea is being discussed. I will keep you all postes. Very nice thinking guys!

I agree with asvipdx-

When there has been a disaster like that in Japan, it doesn't matter how much you may have had before hand. they are a people in need, and they will need much more than that donated already. The amount of damage in too great to just fix quickly. The least we can do short of gong over there to help is do our part any way that we can.

I am really excited with the out come of this challenge. I think that we will be able to raise funds to help out too. : )

i'll be there this weekend. i'm hoping the radiation will clear up my acne.

Ja das ist sehr kontrovers - ich glaube nicht dass das so einfach zu beantworten ist. Ich persönlich denke, dass da jeder selbst schauen muss, was er diesbezüglich machen möchte. ^^

Hey everybody - could anyone give me a link to a high-resolution version of the Japan Society Logo? My "best" version is of 65 KB and not so suitable for enlargement... Thx.

Has been settled. Thx Bert! ;o)

Hey guys, will you ever stop checking the votes?

Patience is a virtue H2O ;) Hang in there just a little more, Cassandra will announce the winners very soon. Thx.

I know, unfortunately this is not the only virtue i'm missing. Besides water is never patient. But i will try to!

Hey guys!

CONGRATS! The ratings are finished. The Top 25 are final on the overview page. (Sorry there is no markers with the places of 1 - 25 on the challenge. )

Images from the gallery will be up next week along with the initial amount of funds raised.

Check out the site : http://aauaiga.com/arise/ I will keep you posted to when the posters will be going on sale as well.

Great work to everyone involved. This was such an awesome project to be apart of and you all seemed to really enjoy it and want to help.

Thanks, Cassandra

GREAT!!! THE POSTER ARE GONNA BE SELL?... I THOUGHT WAS JUST THE EXHIBITION!!! THAT'S AN AMAZING NEWS!!! :) IT WOULD BE GREAT IF COULD HAVE THE 1-25 MARKERS!!!... ;) THIS WAS AN EXTRAORDINARY CONTEST!!! THANKS!!! :)
