Bycatch – Using what normally will be thrown over board
A platform for market fish which is wandering over board while not intended to be caught

You all for sure have heard from bycatch: The fish or more common all sea species who are getting caught be fishermen and not originally targeted to getting caught. The idea is to market parts of the bycatch as eatable, valuable food. The idea is start with a blog about sustainable fish buying, processing and consuming. It could be a community of local ventures helping to market and sell fish which would normally not be eaten ending up with sustainable catering for companies.

In summary, what is your “Made on Coboat” project idea (max. 3 sentences)?

While traveling the sea, it could help to get in contact with local communities: Fishermen, producers and consumers; to collect recipes and approaches for consuming less known species, getting in contact with marine protection organizations to better understand local obstacles. Finally: A motivated and creative crowd on- and off board would be a good start for intense validations, feasibility checks and maybe tastings. ;-) But also support in topics I am not too skilled so far.

How much of your project can you realistically achieve in 100 days if you will get the chance to stay on the Coboat?

Creating a first platform, a blog post and a collection of recipes should be doable. Also picking one specific market for a feasibility study I would personally engage afterwards. Ideally creating the foundation of recipes and sourcing addresses to be published as a book.

Will you complete this project on your own, or will you be working with a together with a team?

Starting own my own, but more than happy to welcome other enthusiasts with me! We are all sitting in one boat - literally as well as in a wider sense!

Why should your project be chosen?

Because it would most perfectly fit - a venture around ocean life and sustainability being started on the ocean! While using the route of coboat would help to get the most insightful intense research for making this project a success! Because it helps to show that digital nomads can make a better world! Because we all would have a benefit - by a a more balanced fishing consumption!

What does this project mean to you?

Its a great start for me to start into the second half of my professional life. I collected lots of experiences in smaller and bigger companies; now it's time to take over own responsiblity - for me and for the next generations.

Why do you want to do this project?

Combining passion for the sea and the feeling of responsibility for our nature, I like to dedicated next steps of my professional life not just doing a profession by business, but a profession by heart. I learned during an apprenticeship in the historical chemical industry of former GDR, what pollution means. I learned during a stay in Southern France during a fishing trip with a local Fisherman, how valuable bycatch being thrown over board. It's never too late doing better business!
