Solution

Zero Waste Market is a grocery store offering 100% package-free whole foods and fresh produce, specializing in local, organic, and ethically sourced bulk items. We want to revolutionize the food system and inspire customers to make more sustainable food choices by enabling them to refill their own containers and reusable bags with food. Not only will we empower our customers to reduce their environmental footprint, but we also work with suppliers to reduce waste further up the food supply chain.

In summary, what is your “Made on Coboat” project idea (max. 3 sentences)?

My “made on Coboat” idea is to bring a sustainable grocery store model to the world. Tackling the food waste problem is hugely important and Zero Waste Market will help divert waste from the landfill one container at a time. I envision a world in which people know where their food comes from and am on a mission to cultivate a better world by promoting waste reduction in all levels of the food supply chain.

How much of your project can you realistically achieve in 100 days if you will get the chance to stay on the Coboat?

While on Coboat, I plan to use the information that has been gathered during primary market research to refine and implement a pre-launch marketing strategy. I will initiate digital zero waste tactics such as social media optimization and content marketing to develop a community of supporters. By the end of my stay on Coboat I will have launched a crowdfunding campaign with a goal of raising 25% of the start-up capital required for store launch.

Will you complete this project on your own, or will you be working with a together with a team?

I will be working remotely with team members in Berlin and Vancouver while drawing inspiration from fellow Coboaters. A global network of peers and mentors is extremely valuable, and Coboat will facilitate the opportunity to share and exchange ideas with open-minded people from diverse backgrounds. I’m looking forward to many brainstorming sessions at sea!

Why should your project be chosen?

One of the biggest challenges we face as a society is increasing access to foods that are healthy both for us and the planet. There are more food choices than ever but we have no confidence in our food: where it comes from, who grows it, how it’s transported, packaged, or what it contains. The planet can only take so much and now is the time to act to educate people about the impacts of their food choices and to promote a more local and sustainable food system.

What does this project mean to you?

I have lived and worked around the world as a marine biologist for nearly a decade and have witnessed firsthand the devastating impacts of our current food system on our oceans including climate change, habitat degradation, marine pollution, and overfishing. This project is what I'm meant to do! It's tremendously important to me as it is a tangible solution for helping to protect the environment that I care so much about.

Why do you want to do this project?

It is my dream to create a purpose driven company with the mission of protecting the oceans that I’ve had the privilege of enjoying and exploring. Having fulfilled a lifelong dream of studying marine mammals, I’ve made the leap to social entrepreneurship and want to be a driving force behind influencing positive social change. I know that food choices matter and want to inspire others to join the global food movement of citizens committed to a brighter, cleaner, and healthier future.

Please tell us a bit about yourself and your professional background. How do you fit into a team? What have you done before within the field of your idea?

I am a marine biologist by day, entrepreneur by night! I’m a team player at heart and have coordinated everything from international marine research projects, to community garden composting workshops, citywide beach clean-ups and varsity cheerleading programs. I am learning to love zero waste livin' and can often found cooking up a storm, experimenting with an arsenal of homemade toiletries, and dragging friends up mountains to appreciate the stunning natural beauty of the west coast.
