I like your project! It will involve the production of container from poor countries. In addition, the production does not pollute the environment. Eco-friendly packaging. Tare quite small. The only problem - the same size tube. A large number of bamboo may go to waste. A great project! :)
Thank you,Max,i think the waste of bamboo can be reused for the manufacture of composite floor,bamboo charcoal..the skin can be made into bamboo weaving...there are so many ways to reuse it,;-)

Yes! it can be reused in many ways like you said,and there is a big advantage, when part of normal crate is broken, the whole crate is useless.but this crate ,you can count on as a Modularized crate,if one bamboo tube is broken ,just change another one,and even the broken one can be reused in many ways..... the weight and size of crate is depend on how many bamboo tubes that you choose,it is up to you! Ilove all aspects exept one - sustainability (brief says about 20 years of usage) Until u use bamboo material use of crate will bre short, but may be bamboo crate is 10 times cheaper than traditional ones.. But overal is 9*

Hey morningstar, I'm curious how eco-friendly is bamboo if you take into consideration cutting it down and processing it? And what about, where are you cutting it down from? Is it a sustainable resource without the risk of damaging another eco-system?
Dear jess: Bamboo is an environmentally sound material,i can tell you from 4 aspects:
1 planting: Bamboos are some of the quickest growing plants in the world, as some species have been recorded as growing up to 100 cm (39 in) within a 24 hour period due to a unique rhizome-ependent system.In various researches it has become clear that bamboo is an important and very fast CO2 fixator. This means that bamboo absorbs, during its growth and life until harvest, a relative big amount of CO2 from the air / atmosphere. After the harvest this CO2 will remain in the material and will only be released when this material is burnt.
2 Harvest: Every year new shoots will grow from the mother plant. Generally 25% of the poles in a bamboo forest or plantation can be harvested per year without decreasing the size of the plantation or the number of poles per hectare. By harvesting the older poles, more energy (light, water) is available for the remaining forest therewith increasing the quality of the forest.
3 Transport: On the other hand CO2 is created by machines and transport means which are needed to produce the bamboo products and bring them to the customer. It is very important to keep the emission of CO2 during this process as low as possible. By comparing the CO2 fixation with the emission during production/transport the CO2 balance can be determined. When the CO2 fixation is larger than the emission, the product is CO2 neutral. Research has shown that most bamboo products are CO2 neutral. In this crate,the processing of bamboo is very simply as you can see in my images.
4 Use &Reuse: Bamboo can be reused in many ways as wine racks, newspaper racks,umbrella racks,flower pot,storage pot,,,,,and there is a big advantage, when part of normal crate is broken, the whole crate is useless.but this crate ,you can count on as a modularized crate,if one bamboo tube is broken ,just change another one,and even the broken one can be reused in many ways..... the weight and size of crate is depend on how many bamboo tubes that you choose,it is up to you!

i think it's cool idea, i love the one bamboo pipe , but little problem on the weight! but this idea still let me feel fresh and nature! :)
I like the organic form, and that you can possibly combine less than 6 bottles!
Very good idea, but maybe it's better to put the strap more in the middle, because the bamboo pipes can't drift apart when stacking.
each of bamboo joint is an individul partition. so that 's what i said the biggest advantage of this design is to utilize the natural shape of bamboo to make the processing as simple as possible.
I'm not sure but how long should grow bamboo that the diameter of trunk could hold a bottle of Coca Cola?
about 10-15M long,it takes only 1 year,and the waste of bamboo can be use to made floor,furniture, there are many way to reuse it!

I'm not sure that you will always be able to find bamboo of the same size. They often bend in different directions. Maybe you should consider these issues and incorporate them somehow?
Thanks for your comment, Dear cleu.most of bamboo grow up straightly, the top of bamboo may be a little bit bend ,because of the gravity, but if you put it down,it is straight! bamboo is elastic and durable!
when coca cola harvests bamboo in large fields/forests, they take away natural use of the land by local animals. by growing large bamboo forests coca cola will have to have a system in place to keep animals out of the field, this usually results in orphaned babies and the killing/relocation of animals which have a right to exist..
Where do you propose they grow this bamboo and have you thought of the consequences of the animal populations and how they will be affected? no probable not...you have no description I suggest you think about the animals which will be affected by your temporary forest.
to me, this idea stinks much like the palm oil plantations in Borneo which is now leading to the extinction of the orangutan. shame.
I have been in Borneo for two weeks last year,,scrub and forest discovery trip is amazing! as you said,the palm oil plantations destroyed the primitive ecological conditions on this region.but things are totally different on bamboo,because bamboo have been grown in Asia for countless millennia.they are part of the primitive ecological enviroment! Since coca cola have many production bases in Asia,why not choose bamboo to make the crate?
I agree with Schauglas. Most of the ideas in this contest have produced beautiful renders and most have listed bio plastic as their preferred material. If you ask any of the them the implications of this, they have no answer and does it really matter coz the main thing going on is not to be environment conscious but to win the contest. Great ideas come with great solutions. If Coca Cola will take up this idea, it is their duty to come up with solutions.
i'm no scientist or engineer but my guess is that working with recycled 'junk' is the best option. best we re use the mess we've made then create more mess.
my point is, lets try to keep the factories out of nature and in the city. best to leave nature alone.

Dear Kijedi : You hit the point! If Coca Cola will take up this idea, it is their duty to come up with solutions. no designer can offer a faultless solution,design is just part of the work,
I'm no scientist nor engineer too. The jury is made up of experts on environmental issues, let them decide. Holly, don't guess. Do a search on Google and you will see that recycling of plastic is not as easy as it seems. As I said, with great ideas, come great solutions. My point is we should not disregard any ideas after all, they are ideas. We can leave the details to the experts.

where are you getting this information? can you cite your source? from what I briefly read it takes 4-7 years to mature and even then it begins to mold quickly.

Sorry,Dear AnnaNuthaThang,i'm not a botanist,all the information come from google,if you want,you can find much more than i did. In my opinion, 4-7 years is much shorter than wood.there are floor ,furniture,laptopcover,cellphone case,bike,,,many products use bamboo as raw material,after some processing ,it won't mold. i state again,There are nothing can be consided no flaw. if you don't like something,you can always find out one thousand reasons to hate,against it. I just hope,as a designer,we can offer more eco-friendly ideas to make a better world,all the choice and following solutions such as to define the bamboo species ,how to work with industrial machines,,it is up to coca cola,designer is not god ,what they did is limited but meaningful!
very very very beautiful idea ..... i like they way you thinking, by the way the bamboo can keep the temperature in it for a long time.... that mean the coca-cola bottle will still cold for a long time and another thing the bamboo is very strong material ..... great work :)

Thank you ,dear hellen, i think my crate is simple enough ,it utilize the natural tube shape,bamboo joint,,it doesn't need lots of work by hand or machine.
Oh, I am flattered.,seriously ,my approach is just trying to find a practicable way to make a "green" crate , it is absolutely not a perfect solution ,there are still many works need to do,,, but i'm really happy that people like it,thank you,my friend!

Dear Elina, How can you conclude that it is difficult to be fulfilled? Since neither of us is scientist or engineer,let's leave it to the experts. and don't forget, dreams can come true, look at the Iphone in your hand ,can you image a cellphone can be so powerful 10 years ago?
I want to make dreams come true :))) It is difficult, because it will need to sort the bamboo, making hand-assembled and exported to Germany. I think it should be more elaborate development and fixing of bamboo handles with each other. But anyway, I love your idea. :)

hey morningstar :D i really like the innovative thinking on the concept !! as far as i know bamboo is the fastest growing plant and a very strong material this makes it very suitable for use in production. on the other hand scaling this principle up for mass production wil be almost impossible. good luck un the voting :)

I like the ecological aspect but I am not sure about: - You have to find bamboo in the same size (waste of the smaller and bigger once). - What about the red tablett in the shop? - To get the plastic belt in the bamboo is a lot of handwork - wet bamboo smells moldy - someone wrote above, about the transport and logistic. Bamboo does not crow everywhere ... But this is just my opinion. Btw I like plastic because im in the oil business ;-)
Hm. It's not working :-) Think about marketing and product placement in the supermarket. It's important to spot a product and to recocnize it from a specific distance. nice idea for the material but doesnt support Cokes corporate design imho and makes it difficult to find in a supermarket.
