Observation

The average employee thinks of his/her learning and skills development as a means to improving his/her resume, status in the company, salary, etc. A smaller subset of employees might see personal learning and skills development as a means to improving the future of their company! Yet, for almost all employees, so far there has not been any connection between personal learning and skills development and the social causes or global issues these employees believe in.

Conclusion

Many people have causes that they believe in - societal, political, global (e.g. climate change awareness, etc). These people are happy to support the causes they believe in, and donate time, energy and even money towards these causes.

We could link personal learning and skills development and the social causes or global issues, and thus motivate employees to actively seek learning and skills development as a means to a greater end - the company-sponsored support of their favorite causes!

Solution

Employers shall commit to support a list of legitimate charities and non-profit social organizations, a list that includes employees' suggestions after vetting. Employees opt into a program that evaluates their current knowhow and skills and makes career-relevant suggestions for what to upgrade and how. Employees' progress in learning thereafter is matched by company donations to their chosen charities. And possible sabbaticals to go work short-term on their favorite causes. A win-win for all!

How would you stage or advertise your hack?

The program would be communicated to employees in tandem with their employee benefits information. I don't know if the ForeWork group is specifically looking for ideas in the European setting. In the USA, many major employers have programs in place that match monetary donations made by employees to charities with donations from company funds. Similar programs can be created, providing positive reinforcement, recognition, and higher percentages of company funded donations for employees who actively raise their knowhow and skills levels. In doing so, the employer also earns greater loyalty from the employees.
