Solution

Two of the most vital things in life are water and social contact.

An odd combination you say? Here's how we combine the two in a meaningful way:

Water is THE source of life and should be readily available to everyone - even when out and about. That is why we thought about public drinking fountains. They are available and appreciated all over the world... In Berlin however you might die of thirst before finding one.
But our idea doesn't stop there. People in big cities often don't know the people that live around them. The sense of community somehow got lost along the way. That is why our drinking fountain brings people together. The person wanting to drink needs the help of another person turning a lever on the other side of the fountain (out of reach for the thirsty one). So whether it's a friend or an up-to-now-stranger, communication and interaction (and fun!) are the key to this cooperative drinking fountain.

Please describe your idea in one sentence.

Our playful and innovative water fountain gives all Berliners access to drinking water in parks and other public places by interacting with other people. This underlines the importance of co-operation and community.

Who will benefit from your idea, hence whom is your idea directed towards?

All Berliners young and old who enjoy their time out and about. Not to forget the dogs, of course. Be it in parks, pedestrian precincts, playgrounds etc.

Why is your idea “good for Berlin”?

Our cooperative water fountain has multiple positive impacts. It quenches the thirst of active Berliners by offering free water. Thus it extends the time spent outside instead of at home, which is good for public health. This is topped off by the necessary interaction - sometimes with total strangers - to get the water flowing, which in turn can be a conversation starter leading towards getting to know the people in the community.

How many people do you think will benefit from your idea?

As water is life, literally EVERYBODY who enjoys time outside can appreciate a free sip of water now and then.

In what way does the Berliner Sparkasse gain visibility through your idea?

Being spread all over the city's public spaces, Berliner Sparkasse as the initiator, will profit from the satisfaction people get when being refreshed by a sip of water. (Different designs allow for a stronger or a rather low-key appearance)

Also, doing good in the community is 100% in line with the social commitment of the Sparkassen in comparison to "regular" banks. The necessary co-operation is a metaphor for the fact that we can reach our aims when we work together and support each other.

Which kind of people and how many of them will take notice of your campaign?

Public spaces and especially parks attract people of all sorts: kids playing, teens riding skateboads, students barbecueing, couples sunbathing, people going for a run, dog owners walking their dogs ... just to name a few. Our simple water fountain means enhanced quality of life for all of these people.

How much do you estimate the annual budget for the implementation of your idea to be?

Standard drinking fountains start at around 500 Euro per piece. Needing to be custom-built, our witty water fountain will probably be more expensive. Obviusly a larger number of drinking fountains will lower the unit price.

The only running costs would be the price of the water itself and the maintenance.

A co-operation with the city, the Wasserwerke or other institutions could lead to a greater number of drinking fountains refreshing Berliners all over the place.
