I think that a motion sensor is a more expensive alternative. I think one with a timer or one with a container that limits the amount of water you can use on a certain task is better. Let's imagine that one has to cook and requires only I liter of water. A tap with that can give only specified amounts will ensure that no extra drop is wasted . Sorry , one more thing. I strongly agree that all public building should have at least some kind of monitoring system.

I understand what you mean, but taps with built-in motion sensors are not that expensive comparing with the same tap model without the sensors. And the second you take your hands or any object away from the sensor the water stops flowing. I think your solution would be a good complement, along with the sensors, for big kitchens, if someone can program the tap to release only 1 liter or the amount required for certain cooking task it would be great! But i see no practical use for bathrooms or toilets. But still, if you can reduce water waste only in kitchens it would be a very good advance on water saving :)

I love that you're so into this issue and that you comment and challenge me :) I think that whatever good comes out of this competition would make us both very pleased even if we are winner or not :) This is not only for kitchens. Plant watering could be another use - certain species require a certain amount. Or maybe in constructions - you require specific amounts of water. I know my images show a common tap but measuring can work for many things . The timer has the same principle. One knows that for that certain water pressure and pluming in 30 seconds 10 liters of water will come out. I still think a timing system or a container type mechanism would be cheaper.

I don't know what happened with my comment - well it was about motion detectors and situations in which they are unreliable - like the times I reached for the soap in restaurants where is was designed next to the tap and the tap started without me wanting it too. Like doors with such systems that open if you are close enough even if you don't want to go in or out.

Just make sure your poposal have a feature in which the users can close the tap any time they want, not just to wait until the time is finish.

Otherwise, if I take 6 seconds to wash my hands and the timer is set for 10 seconds, then there would be 4 seconds of water wasting.

I , personally, think that part of why people love hotels is that it takes away from daily responsibilities + I am sure that they include in the room charge everything. I think something like this that reminds to much of care you have at home would damage the industry. I'm not saying that one should not be conscious of the issue always, everywhere and every time they use/abuse the water supply. I think this wonderful approach of yours could be turned into something with a less punitive note. How about having a meter in each room and those that go under the estimated average get a complimentary meal or discounts for their future stay. What do you think ? I'm one of those that think awareness can be generated using the old saying " One catches more flies with honey then with vinegar. " Again thank you so much for your interest and support.

I really like your incentive-based adaptation. The meters and comps should accomplish the same educational objective that I was going for.

Yes these would be devices that resemble current water meters but with a function for stopping water after a certain amount is used ( based on alloted amounts to an apartment / office / public restroom etc...) Also I imagined them to be able to work somewhat close to the programs on a washing machine - water flowing with a certain pressure for a certain time ... I'm hoping to show all this and more ( like displays for educational purposes and awareness ) when updating next weekend.

This will have an educational side to it but as I said in a comment on another entry I wish not to make my point based mainly on the financial side of things. Money is very real but the value of water should be perceived in different parameters. I also believe in positive examples - rewarding good behavior versus punishing the bad ( I do not exclude the latter just prefer the first one). The images are meant to illustrate an idea not a product - you are right I'm not expecting people to want to buy something that looks like it has a test tube on top :)) Product design is very important sadly it is not my forte. I find your wish highly unlikely to become true but thank you for the kind words. I actually think we will all be surprised by the jury award ( if they decide to award it at all ). I'm kind of saddened that some ideas, although winners, did not make it higher while some great ideas aren't even in the first 20 and have very low rating although they are smart and efficient.
