3D Lapidary Scanner - (3D Solid Scanner ... not just external shapes)
Scan objects in super hi-fidelity to produce 3D INTERNAL models.


This work was completed at the University of Florida by me alone with some assistance from the UF Chemistry machine shop facility.

Explain how and why you created this work. Was it for a specific brief, etc.?

I noticed that a thumb-print on a glass surface show fine detail that could be captured in 2D. So polishing away the surface will expose a new layer and the image is captured again through the entire specimen. Software is used to reassemble polished surfaces into the finest 3D models yet available from any other form of scanner.

What were you trying to express?

I thought that many students are encouraged into dissecting insects and frogs. Why not save the creatures from destruction by scanning them internally and honor the animal that may have already died by natural causes. Study fossils in exquisite detail down to the cellular level and potentially the molecular level. Generate rich copyrighted 3D content for starving minds to learn.

Is it 100% your original work?

There is prior art cited in the patent. Renderings include publicly available 3D parts as would an actual prototype would require publicly available real parts. "This result is obtained by using 3DMed software developed by Medical Image Processing Group, Institute of Automation, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (www.3dmed.net).”
