Background

Dr. Wladimir Klitschko’s life has been driven by an extraordinary and multifaceted career. 
He is well known as the second longest reigning boxing champion in history with the most title defences. He currently holds the WBA, IBF, WBO, IBO and the “Ring Title” and is thereby the dominant force in the heavyweight division.  He also studied philosophy and sport science and holds a doctoral degree for the latter one. Klitschko’s  life credo is simple and yet unique: A healthy mind in a healthy body. It is the continuous strive to unlock the human potential across all areas of life. It’s the relentless will to progress that sets him apart. For that reason, he has been active in many fields – especially with regard to social campaigns or own charity fonds.

His ambition is the foundation for the next level: A business enterprise with his name starting with a very own mineral water – the beginning, essence and fuel of life!

In doing so, he went on a journey to the Carpathian mountains with an expert team to discover a fountain that is particular in terms of freshness and mild taste. He even believes to perceive a special sound, when hearing the water splashing over the stones.

This mineral water marks the very first step within a number of future products and ventures with the Klitschko name. It is therefore crucial to develop not only a distinctive and appealing, but also highly versatile identity for “Klitschko – the choice of the champ”, a brand that can ba applied to all future products.

Aim

The aim is to create a brand logo and a bottle design based on Klitschko’s name. It should not only catch people’s eyes, both in restaurants, bars and stores, but also serve as a foundation for future businesses.

Task Definition

Your challenge is to

1. Design a Logo for the new “Klitschko” brand
The “Klitschko” brand stands for high-quality health- and fitness-products in the area of nutrition and equipment. Most importantly, it has to convey and underline Wladimir’s credo of a healthy mind and healthy body.
- You can use either the brand name “Klitschko” or “Dr. Klitschko”

2. Design a bottle for the “Klitschko” mineral water including its lid and its label.

- The bottle will be available in two sizes. Show your design on the example of the 75DL bottle. If you like present as well a  25DL version. Its up to you to decide to design a glas- or PET- bottle, just as you think what might be best for your design. Ideally it should work in both materials.

Think global when designing the branding and the bottle:

  • Your branding has to work on an international level (especially in the soviet region)
  • The overall design should support the “healthy mind, healthy body” positioning
  • It can have a reference to sports, but may definetly not have a reference to boxing!
  • It must be possible to mass produce (industrially manufacture) the bottle
  • It must be “designful” and functional by nature

Target Group

The truth is: water is essential to live! Thus, nobody should be fundamentally excluded.
Nevertheless, Klitschko wants to target people based on their mind sets and not on their gender, age or income
First it`s about those ones, who care more about their health and fitness than the average.
Secondly it’s about those ones, who appreciate good design, good taste and quality in production. They love new experiences, are open minded but also critical. They often look out for the “meaning” in products and brands. For them it’s not just about a nice brand name, but also about the story behind it.

Tonality

1. Straightness:
Straightness has a clear opinion. No frills or dog & pony show. It’s not about arrogance, but it’s about a stand for what you believe in. It is direct, but never brash our loud.

2 Integrity:
Integrity is about the restless passion, strive and dedication – whatever comes! Day in, day out. It’s about respect for others and for one selves. It’s about knowing when to step back and when to step in.

3. Excellence:
Excellence means high quality from A to Z. It’s not about luxury or high premium prices for the sake of it, but about the self-confidence to deliver the best possible product in and for a successful way.

Mandatory requirements

The following elements may not feature your design:

  • Depiction of violence or depictions of weapons
  • Sexist insinuations
  • It can have a reference to sports, but may not have an explicit reference to boxing!
  • No references to politics

Only use image material for which:

  • you own the full copyright or
  • the exclusive rights of which you can, if required, pass on the client. 

Your bottle must be producible on common production lines.

Hi Mocki it was only a matter of minutes as we deployed an update while you were submitting your idea. Deploying updates happens multiple times a week but usually this shouldn't lead to any hick-ups. Right now we simply have a ton of traffic on our system. Which is great :)

What is the "Special Surprise Prize"? A sparring partner for one day of Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko? ;D

Since this project is all about his exciting future ventures, maybe it's rather a hike through the Carpathian mountains. We'll just have to wait and see!

So if I understand well, we should either use the name "Klitschko" or "Dr Klitschko" but should definetly not made any reference to boxing? I'am sorry to ask , but "Did somebody recieved maybe to many beatings on his brain"?

The task is to design a logo for the Klitschko brand and water bottle. The overall design should support the “healthy mind, healthy body” positioning and as seen in the Mandatory Requirements, no, there should be absolutely no reference made to boxing.

I want to clear out misunderstandings. The task is: 1. to create a logo for the trademark "Klitschko" or " Dr. Klitschko" unconsidering the mineral water project. Maybe a wordmark or an icon. 2. to create a bottle design for mineral water and simply named "mineral water". 3. there is no need to find a mineral water brand name and seperate logo. Am I right?

1) Right, the brand name and trademark should be "Dr. Klitschko" or "Klitschko". It is the first step within a number of future ventures with the Klitschko name. The brand is supposed to be universal for many more aspects than just water – like an umbrella brand logo not just related to water.

2) Right, the second step is a bottle design and label for mineral water, simply named "Dr. Klitschko's" Mineral Water or "Klitschko's" Mineral Water.

3) Right, there is no need to find a mineral water brand name and seperate logo.

Just a additional question: If I now uderstand the complete direction of the briefing right we have two different contests in one, right? 1) Create a mineral water botter 2) Create an umbrella brand name and logo

While the Client's Choice distinguishs betwenn both, the community prizes don't...? Wouldn't it be bad if we at least change the voting for distinguishing bottle design & brand name/logo?

Good day I have a question. The client is looking something that connect their product with healthy lifestyle, rather than connect with water or sport, is it right? So, i have to designed the logo & bottle that can reflect the health lifestyle? Futuristic, minimalism & abstract one seem to be working really good in some ideas. I have to rethink & redesign again without the water, wave, flow & sport.

The first week has passed and I'm simply amazed by the number of ideas so far. Every day is indeed a new day with new ideas and new insights.

Thank you all for your great input!

I’ve been thinking about your approaches and I would love to share my first impressions:

  1. Working initials and symbols Many of you have adopted an approach with the letter „K“ or even „KO“. I find this very interesting and I have wonder how further this could go. Maybe on the cap of the bottle or as the first part of my name? I don’t know - but I’d be happy to see more of it! Example: Mercedes has a star and Nike has that famous swing, etc.

  2. Working with my current logo. Some of you might have seen my current logo on our official website (the one with the big K and O). Perhaps it’s a bit outdated, but I wonder if you could think about an „evolutionary“ way to modernize it. It’s really important for me to see different approaches and I don’t want to miss a chance.

  3. Brand extensions. As you may all know, mineral water is just a very first step. I really hope that there are many things to come – my brain is working every day. So, please keep in mind that the design should be somewhat „extendable“ in soft drinks department. For instance line of juices, or functional drinks.

I know, I'm not a professional designer but I really hope that my input helps. Thanks a lot my friends and keep up on "punching"!

Thanks for this early jury feedback. But I must say I'm a bit confused a second time. Following the briefing me and a lot of others thought you are looking for a drinks brand. When you read the discussion above you will find the direction to an umbrella brand for more activities than drinks. Special sports equipment (like the muscle wing by kernpower) for example or whatever was my idea. But now you write: "So, please keep in mind that the design should be somewhat „extendable“ in soft drinks department. For instance line of juices, or functional drinks." Could you please clarify this point?

This is really not only some helpful but even some very important feedback, Wladimir! Thanks a lot! Great to know how you see the whole development and that the "KO"-combination (in what way ever) is NOT "completely" out of the world... but might be interesting to follow. ;) Anyway... I think there's still a lot of time to work on the ideas - let's rock the contest, guys & gals!!! :))

We are very happy to inform you that you have just broken a record. Wladimir Klitschko found the ideas he was looking for in just one week.

In most cases a client requires weeks to make their choice and this even after a project is closed. In this case your ideas convinced Wladimir with outstanding fast performance.

Wladimir and the jury have seen your work and are blown away! In cooperation with Jung von Matt he has reviewed all current submissions and is 99% sure he already has found the right ideas to go on with.

Since we are well aware you invest your valuable time into the projects and out of respect for your time and creativity we therefore decided together with Wladimir and Jung von Matt that for the first time in jovoto history we end a project earlier than expected.

Still, we of course wish to see what is in the pipeline - so this is deal: please submit your work until Friday, July 4th (just in time for a lovely long holiday weekend if you are residing in the US). Voting is then open until the following Wednesday, July 9th.

The jury will equally be as quick with their decision and announce it by Friday, July 11th - we can already tell you that the then chosen winner will be invited to work closely with Wladimir and his team in order to turn the chosen idea into a reality.

#2 Logo: The search for the logo appeared to be a bit more difficult. There a simply so many ways to it!  Heike taught me that great logos have meaning or even better: a story behind it!  One logo appeared to carry some sort of story, something I could maybe build on. 

We saw a story in Triangle by Roland Hangyel! 

We like the holistic appearance of it: Three forces in absolute balance and harmony.  It is very clear and fits perfectly into the world of health. There is another thing, why I like it:  It could be my approach to the Nike Swoosh, my very personal brand icon (maybe on the cap?).

from a professional point of view the logo is not at all a rip-off or copy of a Dymler Christler logo. You can see and find clear and significant differences.

Of course there are hand water-dumbbells on the market, but the task of this project was to find a unique design for a mineral water bottle.
