Existenzminimum implies a design sensibility that offers the greatest amount of comfort with the highest degree of efficiency. Although efficient, Existenzminimum does not overlook the poetic richness and rituals associated with dwelling; this project seeks to reintroduce the fullness of the dwelling experience through a considered palette of materials, open transformable space, natural daylight, and sustainable construction. As the life edited title suggests, the apartment has been designed to offer a multitude of living arrangements with the least amount of operations. The space transforms with the slightest of ease, without feeling like one has to always push, pull or put-away. To this end, Existenzminimum results in an apartment of reduction and efficiency, while simultaneously embracing and celebrating the poetic fullness of city dwelling.
All design investigations and images were created using a large 1:10 scaled physical model. It is our belief that the physical model readily lends itself to a scaled perception and true understanding of the dimensions of the actual space. As a primary design tool for such a small space, the physical model reduces the misleadings of exaggerated perspectives and virtual scales, and is a clearer indication of how the space will appear.
