The idea is to meet ALL of the requirements of the project in a simple way. I basically took many complicated ideas I came up with that involved furniture and various moving systems and then began removing parts until all that was left was what was needed.
I am submitting two versions of a similar idea. Both keep the kitchen, bath and bed area against the west side of the apartment and the office, lounging and dining on the east side of the apartment. This allowed for less material usage and more open space. The north and south storage walls and east area are exactly the same in both plans, only the configuration of the west area changes. A fabric curtain would be used to divide spaces as needed.
Materials: reclaimed+salvaged woods, homasote panels (for acoustics), white laminate or paperstone, etc, environmentally friendly fabrics (such as Knoll) or other, glass, flooring to be light colored marmoleum or reclaimed/fsc certified wood.
I was very excited when I stumbled upon this contest. I agree with all of the ideas behind this contest and live very similarly in San Francisco. I can't wait to see the completed project.
