A thermal efficient floor that emits harvested heat but also uses it to create unique patterns


Infra-red technology has been around for years, and now scientists are working on energy efficient methods of harnessing infra red energy and using it for heating purposes.

This project proposes we take this technology and use it not only to heat up spaces by storing and releasing heat from the surrounds and the earth, but through the art of thermal imagery use the same technology to create a floor that is expressive of its surroundings. That is to say, I aim to create a self heating '[floor that has an ever changing pattern on it, a pattern defined by the ambient temperature in a space and the heat radiated from beings and objects in or onto the space.

Which problem does your idea solve?

Eco-friendly, energy efficient heated flooring. With the added bonus of an interesting floor with heat controlled or heat defined patterns.

How does your idea solve the problem?

Through the use of infra-red technology, this floor will absorb and store ambient heat, through infra-red receptors. Thermotropic liquid crystals will respond to the heat, creating unique patterns.

What is the benefit of your idea for the target group?

A modern floor that can be mass produced but will always be one of a kind - a floor heated by energy harvested from the surrounds. An eco-friendly yet affordable option for the homeowner

Which materials are you using and why?

Transparent polycarbonate panels - durable and would be good for my heating system.

Which aesthetic does your idea follow?

Soft psychedelic, futuristic modern.
