A STORY TELLER MARKET HOTEL


The ideia is create a downtown Manhattan Hotel with a unic and peculiar aspect: a story teller market, the perfect setting to bring together locals and travelers.


A market for recycled, second hand and hand made goods which focuses on style and personal culture. The goods can be vintage clothes, recycled furniture, craftwork, etc, but they all must tell a story... each item must be presented with a short story by and about its seller. Selling here is not only social as it is done together, but also takes into account the social aspects of having stuff. What you have, sell, want to have or buy, defines your identity.


It's a place about people, people with diferent culture, purpuses and interests and an hotel that brings them all together. A place where the simple act of trading goods turns into an act of sharing stories and connecting with others.


Reinforcing these connections, the story teller market will be also open to auction sales and will have workshops, where people can learn to recycle and make hand made goods.


ARCHITECTURE AND DÉCOR INSPIRATIONS


CONCEPT

The hotel is the main setting where the �Story Teller Market� takes place, a market where recycled, secondhand and handmade items �tell� the story about their owners/sellers� the guise that leads people, who usually go to a market only with the purpose to buy, to actually become involve with the �life experience� of the person who is selling� this particular Hotel is the �stage� where people, with different interests and goals, bound with each other�  at the end, those who passed by, end leaving with more than a good�.

Keeping this thought, the idea is conceive a contemporary hotel with a �home feeling�, by artfully mixing modern architectonic elements with some antique/vintage details. The idea is giving all the hotel areas their one identity and story, keeping in mind an environment concern,  by using, for instance, secondhand and recycled pieces. 


MARKET AREA

The Story Teller Market will take place twice a week and everyone is welcome to share his own story�

It�s important that the Market Area itself pass on the Story Teller concept.  It must be, of course, suitable for a fair but it should be as well cozy and warm.  The idea is to conceive a clean, modern, functional open space with contemporary equipment (clean design is important, to maintain the focus on the selling items, which are recycled, second hand and hand made goods) but also with some vintage décor and architectonic details on the walls...  


WOKSHOP/AUCTION AREA 

In between the market days and reinforcing the connections between locals and hotel guests there will be workshops and auction sales.

The Workshop /Auction Area must follow the same conceptual guidelines within the all hotel project, mixing contemporary elements with a few spotlight vintage details, at the same time keeping it simple and mostly multifunctional, considering the logistics and needs of the activities that will occur in this space.     


RESTAURANT / BAR LOUNGE

The Restaurant and Bar Lounge it will be a premier dining and gathering spot, open to both hotel guests and locals, for lunch, dinner, special events and cocktails. The idea is having a lounge area that provides a casual yet sophisticated atmosphere, keeping the welcoming feeling that characterizes the rest of the hotel.


GUESTROOMS

All the hotel rooms will have a contemporary déco yet with a particular different vintage detail or piece, giving the guests the idea that each room has its peculiar story and identity. All of them, however, will have the same warm and relaxing ambient. 


COMMON SPACES

Much like all the other hotel areas, these spaces (such as the reception, lobby, etc) must bring perfectly together diverse styles, recreating the same cozy and harmonious surrounding. 


DECORATIVE STORY TELLER ITEAMS

It's a hotel where people can also leave a little story, their own litle story. Besisdes buying or selling, people can donate a special piece or belonging to decorate the hotel. These iteams, wich can be an antique mirrow, radio, sewing machine, hand made object, etc, will be use as decorative piece in each room or common area at the hotel.

STORY TELLER PIECES

As told before, all the areas of the hotel will have a particular piece, a �story teller piece�, giving all spaces a unique touch, a homegrown and cozy feeling� At the initial hotel decoration stage, these particular pieces will be donated by public figures or bought from unknown people. In this case, the hotel will promote a special �online story teller market�, properly divulged in advanced, where people who wish to sale can post their �story teller items� on the hotel website� the hotel will buy the �best story teller pieces �.


MARKET AREA� Desks/ Exhibitors and Sales Material

There will be specific rules about the market desks/exhibitors design, because it�s important to create an oneness visual language, therefore all these stands will have the same clean design with a proper spot where the stories will be placed on.

With the same concern, all the sales material (such as the bags, labels, etc) will also follow one single Layout, the �Story Teller Hotel Brand�.

 


II - HOTEL OPENING

 

MARKETING AND PROMOTION

Weeks before the hotel opening, every day, a clue about some of the donated �story teller pieces� will be release to the public:

First, images of these pieces will be placed in several spots of the city, places that make part of everyone daily routine like coffee shops, bus and subway stations, etc�

Then gradually more details about those pieces will be given, i.e., day by day, people will start getting what�s behind those images, which and whose story those particular pieces tell about.


OPENING DAY

Finally at the opening day, some of public figures will be invited to tell the story about the piece they have donated to the hotel. This particular event will take place at the market area.

 


III - HOTEL MODUS OPERENDI

 

1.       STORY TELLER MARKET

The market will take place once a week, all Thursdays.

Each �Story Teller�/seller has the opportunity to have a desk /exhibit for a month, than he must give away his place to another Story Teller/Seller, but if he wishes so, he can return again a few months later.

Even though the market happens only once a week, the pieces will be exposed at the market area all week and each Story Teller/Seller can choose a specific day to present his piece(s) story (more detailed) to locals and hotel guests.


ONLINE STORY TELLER MARKET

To those who can�t exhibit and sell their pieces at the market during the all month, which will be probably the case of the foreigners, there is the possibility to exhibit and sell the pieces online at the hotel website. The �Online Story Teller Market� can operate as well as a place to the story tellers/Sellers divulged their pieces and announce their next presence at the Hotel Market. 

 

2.       AUCTION SALES

The auction sales will happen once a month, each last Saturday.

These auctions will happen with the purpose to sell and highlight the pieces which weren�t sold during the market period. These events will happen during a Gourmet Degustation, offered by the hotel. 

 

BENEFICENT AUCTION SALES

Twice a year, the Hotel will organize a Beneficent Auction Sales, with donated pieces from public figures. The earnings from these events will revert to social solidarity entities.

 

3.       WORKSHOPS � Recycled and Handmade items

The workshops will take place once a week and they will be supervised by invited professionals or professionals that wish to share their skills and abilities with others. These supervisors will be chosen by qualified specialists. 

Afterwards, some of the techniques and ideas explored in the workshops, as well as the final works, will be posted at the hotel website.

 

4.       HOTEL DECORATIVE STORY TELLER PIECES

For the guests who don�t wish to attend the market or any other activities, there is another way to get into the Story Teller Spirit/Concept, they can always buy the decorative �Story Teller Pieces� from their own hotel room (like the bad, for instance), or from any other hotel common area.   

 


MARKET/AUCTION PIECES SELECTION

The selection of all pieces and goods (�story teller pieces�, recycled, second hand and hand made goods) will be done by professionals: auctioneers and qualified experts. This selection extends to the market and to the auction sales.
