Samsung is the most popular consumer electronics brand in Germany (Brand Attitude Survey Germany, 2012; tns). With its innovative products Samsung has significantly influenced the smart TV segment and set new benchmarks within this sector. For the strategic further development of the smart content and to further develop the offer of smart TV apps Samsung is now launching the Samsung Smart TV Appcademy, which is offering students at German universities a platform on which to develop concept ideas for the smart TV apps of the future.
Almost every second television sold in Germany is already internet-enabled. And it will be hard to imagine life without smart TVs in the future, automatically increasing the use of app offers.
Due to the fact that it is being merged with the web, linked up with smartphones and tablets and in particular because of the new smart TV apps, television is set to become an interactive super medium with lots of new functions.
On-demand smart TV apps deliver you your own personal TV, video or music choices. They offer you innovative services and exciting games, actively controlled by you, either via voice, gestures – or your compatible smartphone and tablet. Precisely this integration of TV and further end devices enables new forms of interaction, broadens options for TV navigation and also makes the television a virtual meeting point thanks to the connection with chat and social networks. After all, with the use of apps, TV is not only becoming personalized and smart, but also sociable.

The Samsung Smart TV Appcademy project is divided into two rounds – the preliminary round and the main round.
The preliminary round on jovoto
That's how you become one of five finalists: One community winner - four jury finalists
The preliminary round is taking place here on jovoto. By assessing each other’s work the jovoto Community determines the ranking of ideas and selects one of five finalists for the main round. The preliminary round jury, consisting of the Samsung Content competence team and other external experts, chooses another four finalists for the main round.

After completion of the preliminary round each of the 5 finalists receives an advance payment of € 1,000 for their work in the main round. In the main round the finalists take part in a high-level workshop. Awaiting the finalists are further cash prizes to the total value of € 10,000 and countless non-cash prizes from Samsung’s innovative product portfolio.
Make the most of the opportunity to evaluate the ideas of your colleagues and to give them feedback. By doing this you will be contributing to the improvement of the ideas – but always ensure you act fairly. The earlier you submit your own ideas, the sooner you can profit from the feedback of others and if necessary also improve your own idea.

The main round
The Samsung Workshop gets you ready for the jackpot
In the main round the five finalists from the preliminary round further develop their concept for a Samsung smart TV app. For this the students will be supported by experts from Samsung and the industry during a workshop on 31.01.2013 in Frankfurt am Main. They will also be able to borrow high-quality equipment in order to realize their smart TV app. After the workshop the finalists of the preliminary round work on their smart TV app idea and develop the first demo version of their app for the Samsung Smart TVs. In March 2013 the five winning teams will present their concepts and apps in Berlin in front of a top-class jury. The jury, consisting of a selected panel of experts, assesses the ideas and awards the best smart TV app idea. The best app will be finalized with the support of Samsung, presented as part of a big official event and made available on the Samsung Smart TVs.
