Functional and iconic folding furniture design for everyday purposes. My proposed object is based on modular aluminium transforming surfaces. Its application shifts between table and stool, and more! Often in Japanese home (and not only there), the coffee and tea table is replaced by volumetric stool. It is used for both seating or serving hot drinks, depending on the situation. Placed in front of the couch it could also be used for resting one's legs, making that table/stool a multifunctional object. Its wide versatility inspires me to design that kind of furniture. For comfort during sitting, the top plane is covered with soft material. It can be placed directly on the floor without supporting legs, and the rest of the modular design still used as a table with additional flat top panel.
Solution
What makes your product bold and innovative?
Real folding of furniture into origami style is unconventional, fun and useful! In a moment you are carrying an aluminum flat surface in hand, the next moment it is already fixed into compact and futuristic table/stool. The purpose of folding is to rely on the furniture when you need it and store it easy and convenient when not. The backward process is as simple as the forward, making the furniture really useful in all situations, especially in confined space.
Which target group is this product aimed at?
For everyone.
Why is secondary aluminum the perfect material for your idea?
Secondary aluminum is strong, durable, readily available and made into furniture, it is not hazardous to people’s health.
Did you use any stock or third party material? If so, please link all stock, fonts and Creative Commons material here:
Everything in this idea is 100% author’s work.
This looks cool! I wanted to read about, but I couldn't- the types too small and hard to read. Good Lucj!
Hey there, the template font is small by default - you can click "download original" and jovoto will open uncompressed version where you can see all details. Another option is to read my description. :)
Wow these are very stylish, practical, simple and 100% secondary aluminum! It fits the Brief really well! :) Did you come up with the whole folding technique? Great work so far and thanks for also using the provided template. Would love to see more ideas in this direction!
Hi Dora! I am so happy to read your words! Yes, the folding is created by me. Soon I will expand my presentation - I have a lot more to show (visuals and some details). Creating such folding and multi-functional product is one of my passions. I have more ideas in that direction, but wish to take the steps one by one. :) Have a wonderful weekend!
Interesting, I made the same stool 4 years ago with the same idea https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojXI7Srq_j0&t=6s https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B4kTZpfHMxg9SFZWQnJNUFFicDA
Hey there, nice concept! Cardboard is an awesome material to play with. Have you tried to make a real size prototype? Is the cardboard made as a student's project?
The folding technique and logic on my idea are different. The visuals look similar and that is completely normal, because they are both based on Japanese folding style.

Good luck!
Yes it was actually a students project in National Academy of art Sofia and my model from cardboard was there for 2- 3 years in one of the workshops and last year you graduated masters with this same stool in the same institution and the same major - Industrial design and you should really ask if you can participate with this project because 50% of the rights to the grad projects go to the Academy.
Wow, I was working on modular Japanese furniture for more than two years and your accusation sounds very funny! I do not know about your cardboard mockup and where it was in that building. I am not sure what are you trying to say exactly... Anyway, Furnitura project is based on my Master's degree, which was based on another one furniture of mine before that. For my proposal, I am using the folding system I have worked on back then. If you are so familiar with me and my works, you would have known how many variations I have made before coming with this folding solution. And I have 2 full-size working prototypes that I use in my home to this day. Made by me from plywood and pine, not scaled-down model from cardboard! Last, but not least, this project isn't my master's degree work! Yes, it is based on it, may look like it, but it is totally different! I see nothing wrong taking something I have worked on and developing it further. I suggest you to stop with that nonsense or I will ask jovoto to take some measures. I don't know what you do around here exactly, but this is not the way things are done. Hope you will understand me! If not, I have nothing more to say.
I do believe that two or more persons can come to the same conclusions or ideas and that's fine I'm just saying that all these projects are the same. And if you like ask jovoto whatever you please I'm on this platform like everybody else - making projects and develop my creativity. Good luck!
And I do have prototype ... http://basgp.org/2016/11/20/%D0%BA%D0%BE%D0%BD%D0%BA%D1%83%D1%80%D1%81-%D0%BA%D0%B0%D1%80%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%B0%D0%B4%D0%B0/
