Introduction – The Lacemaker

Think back to the time when lacemaking was a delicate and fine handcraft that demanded time and skill. Telling a story about the hand that created the object you are holding in yours. Remember Johannes Vermeer’s painting “The Lacemaker” and delve into this long overlooked craft. Imagine entering a room: a light breeze, the curtains gently swaying in the breeze, the last beams of autumn sunlight shining through the lace the woman is affectionately creating, which gradually and powerfully emerges into a beautiful and graceful piece of art.

With this image in mind, you are challenged to transport this delicate craft and atmosphere into a modern context. We invite all textile designers to join us in creating patterns and to become a contemporary lacemaker. If you’re not a member of the Textile Orbit yet, apply now to submit your designs!

Be inspired by the first two public textile design projects and see all the excellent designs that were created in the Artificial Garden and Chinoiserie-Chic!
