These melons are grown inside a fixture which alters their shape as they grow to full size. Square melons are already proven to be producible and marketable on a commercial scale. The fixture is a simple hinged acrylic box into which young fruit are placed while still on the vine. Using the same acrylic boxes with added facets can produce a melon with soccer ball geometry. To take things a step further, we may be able to use a simpler semi-flexible wire net to produce the look of a true soccer ball. The nylon net would keep the melon perfectly round and also mark the surface with the indentations we see on a real soccer ball. These techniques work equally well on all melons including honeydew, which nature conveniently provides us already in team Wolfsburg color.
