Balkan Rooster
Traditional rooster motif, balkan embroidery.

The Balkan Peninsula, or the Balkans, is a peninsula and a cultural area in Southeast Europe with different and disputed borders. While there are great many profoundly important cultural differences between the countries, there is in fact a unified aesthetic within the world of Balkan embroidery, where we can see the symbol of the rooster being used so often, traditionally on clothes or painted.

Which animal(s) did you choose as a visual and why?

I chose a rooster because it is representative for this culture, and it stands for a solar guardian of the traditional household, protecting against the unknown. It also symbolizes the victory of sun and light over darkness.

What culture or region does the animal stand for?

The Balkans region.

What story does your design tell?

The song of the rooster transformed into a beautiful embroidery .

What style did you choose for your design and why?

The basic structure of the design is simple and clean , resembling folk decorative stitched style.

Please make sure you have filled out your country of origin in your profile! It’s important that the regional Victorinox team understands the cultural background of your design.

Have you used any third-party material? Even if you’ve modified or combined it, please know that in this project no stock material is accepted. See “Guidelines, regulations & comments” (in the brief)

My own

To be featured on facebook as the Victorinox "Pick of the Day" please write a short statement about you (see more details in the brief).

Hi, I'm Alex, architecture student and illustrator. I wanted to create a unique design for Victorinox, one inspired by a very common animal at a first glance, but important to this culture and also my own, so ancient and rich in its simple and colourful aesthetic.
