I decided to choose this animal -the xoloitzcuintle- as a representation for my country, because it represents a transcendental thing. In the prehispanic Mexico was considered as a sacred animal. It is believed that in ancient times the Xolo guided his master/owner to Mictlan (the underworld). And that's the reason why it inspired me to plasm it into my art. Not only did I tried to elaborate something that could be easy to understand but also to generate a positive feeling and curiosity in the audience for the culture in my country. I quote a phrase: "Our cult to death, is cult to life" ~ Octavio Paz (Nobel Prize for Mexican Literature).
Which animal(s) did you choose as a visual and why?
I chose the Xoloitzcuintle, because it is the most characteristic animal in Mexico, also Mexico has a special relationship with the culture of death, is that so, that we celebrate the 1 and 2 of November as a tradition to celebrate death as a beautiful transition and as another way to celebrate life at the same time.
What culture or region does the animal stand for?
Aztec culture, Mexico.
What story does your design tell?
My design tells the story of how the dog guides his master. This transcendental journey to the underworld that it's implicit in the draw itself, because the owner never appears on it.
What style did you choose for your design and why?
I use a vector style, because I want to stand out an ethnic textures that I trace in it, also I like to do this kind of projects in Illustrator.
